Google Chrome's cross-platform history syncing is a boon for users, allowing easy access to previously visited pages. Now, Chrome enhances this with "Journeys," a new feature available on Windows, macOS, and Chrome OS. Journeys not only shows visited sites but also the context of your browsing sessions.
Understanding Chrome Journeys
Chrome's history tracking logs every page visited. Journeys refines this by grouping related searches into thematic clusters. As Chrome product manager Yana Yushkina explains, this helps users resume research after interruptions.
Google's algorithms analyze site relationships, topic switches, user interaction, and time spent on each site to group your history. Currently, this data is stored locally, prioritizing user privacy. However, this local storage means Journeys isn't synced across devices. Google plans to add Android and iOS support, but a timeline hasn't been announced. Mobile users can still access their basic browsing history through the three-dot menu.
Accessing Chrome Journeys
On your computer, access Journeys by clicking the three dots (top right), selecting "History," then "History" again (or use Ctrl H/Cmd Y). The "Journeys" tab organizes your history by topic, providing a clearer overview of your browsing activities. Use "Show more" links and "Related searches" to explore further. You can also delete groups of links using the three-dot menu.
The search bar remains functional, allowing specific searches within both the standard "List" and "Journeys" views. If signed into your Google account, a "Resume your research" shortcut might appear in Google Search results, linking to relevant past searches. The feature can be disabled via the "Turn off Journeys" option.
