Google Gemini's latest update introduces Gems, customizable AI chatbots with unique personalities and purposes. These specialized bots offer a focused approach to various tasks, extending Gemini's capabilities without adding new functionality. For example, one Gem might specialize in French language learning, while another could brainstorm vacation ideas.
However, access to Gems is limited to Gemini Advanced, Business, or Enterprise subscribers ($19.99/month for Advanced, including 2TB Google One storage). Here's how to use them:
Using Pre-made Gems
While Gems are accessible via the Gemini Android app and Google iOS app, the web interface offers full customization. Pre-made Gems (like "Brainstormer" or "Career Guide") are readily available in the left-hand menu (access via the three horizontal lines if the menu isn't visible). Each Gem's purpose is evident from its name, and conversations are color-coded for easy identification. Standard Gemini features, such as viewing alternative responses ("Show drafts"), text-to-speech, and copying text, are also available. Note that Gems maintain a task-specific focus; diverting the conversation from the Gem's designated purpose will redirect the response.
Conversation history, including both general Gemini and Gem interactions, is stored in the left-hand navigation pane, color-coded and icon-identified. Conversations can be deleted individually.
Creating Your Own Gems
To create a custom Gem, navigate to "Gem manager" in the left-hand menu, then select "New Gem." Provide a descriptive name and detailed instructions, specifying the Gem's purpose, personality, and desired response style. Existing Gemini instructions (e.g., "keep your answers short and friendly") automatically apply. A built-in editor allows for refining instructions using Gemini's rewriting capabilities. Test your Gem using the prompt box, ensuring accurate and stylistically appropriate responses. Standard features, including Google search integration and draft viewing, are available during the creation process. Once satisfied, save your Gem; it will be accessible from the left-hand pane, Gem manager, and mobile apps. Currently, custom icon and color options are not available.
