While Galbalan might be the true villain of Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana, there's no escaping the pain of a personal betrayal. Bishop's Nikolas' reveal as a disciple of Galbalan at the Clock Tower was heartbreaking, and now he's the last barrier before you can reach his master.

Unlike your first encounter, Bishop Nikolas Garland can and must be defeated this time. He's quite a different beast from his last encounter, though he's far from impossible. Let's put his belief to rest.

Preparation For Dark Bishop Garland

What applies here to Garland is much the same as what will apply to Galbalan as there is no content in between them. First off, try to be around level 45-50, the higher the better. While Garland doesn't feel as severe a challenge as Chester, he still deals quite a lot of damage, so having higher HP and Strength is a great help.

The best thing to have would be the Talisman of War. This is gained after trading the maximum amount of Raval Ore with Antonio, and then giving the Jade Ring to Randolph. This makes your Boost Mode last longer, which is a massive help both for damage-dealing and healing.

Another key one is the Brave Sword. You get it as part of the story, but it is also the only way of breaking Garland's shield during the boss battle. As such, make sure it's fully upgraded before you even attempt this battle.

If you're still struggling with the battle, you can buy the Spirit Necklace back in Redmont for 60,000 Gold. This revives you back to full health if you die, though is fully consumed afterwards. It's a pretty hefty investment, so only equip it if you feel it is necessary. Otherwise, save it for Galbalan.

How To Beat Dark Bishop Garland

When the fight with Garland begins, he will transform into his larger form much like he did in his initial fight, and summon the shield around him once again. The good part here is that the shield is destroyed with a single hit from the Brave Sword.

Once you break the shield, just start assaulting him. He will likely start shooting lightning bolts at you. Avoid them if you can, but it's better to deal as much damage as you can as the lightning bolts aren't incredibly damaging.

After a short while, Garland will summon a gust of wind to push you away and regenerate his shield. Rinse and repeat. While his shield is up, he will summon his scythe as you get close. If he summons it low, jump over it before attacking the shield. If he summons it high, then stay on the ground and it will miss you entirely.

Fireballs are a great source of damage between sword swings as well as they shoot quite quickly and give you time to run from Garland's more powerful attacks.

Another of Garland's moves involves him swinging his sword, though this move is relatively simple to dodge. Another has him summoning orbs of light that chase you. Just outrun them and they'll dissipate eventually.

Alternatively, dash into them with the Terra Bracelet to destroy them and negate the damage.

After his HP is depleted enough, he will shift form for a new attack where he flies at you like a rocket. The camera angle will slightly alter so you can keep track of him, making this attack much easier to avoid. He will dash back and forth across the arena three or four times. Just step out of the way each time. Jumping leaves you much more liable to be hit.

Sometime after this, he will start to unleash his most dangerous attack. Garland will stand in place and summon a vortex around him that attempts to pull you inwards. If you get sucked in, he will lock you into an unblockable attack for a few hits, dealing devastating damage. Run as far from him as you can when it activates, and use the Terra Bracelet to give you some extra distance. Make sure not to jump, as this will just drag you closer to him.

If you do get dragged in, don't be afraid to activate your Boost. This will half the damage you take, and even heal you slightly with Double Boost.

This is the full extent of Garland's moveset. However, you can't deplete his HP entirely. When he reaches one HP remaining, he will reach a supernova state, attempting to drag you in to defeat you in this sacrificial explosion. Use the same methods as you did with his other vortex attacks to keep your distance. If you're low enough on HP, this attack can easily wipe you out.

Provided you avoid the explosion, Garland will be defeated after this explosion and, after a brief cutscene and regret from Garland, you are free to go down to battle Galbalan. Just make sure to go out and save the game first.
