The Oppo Reno12 and Reno12 Pro were launched for the Chinese market earlier this year. Oppo has now announced global variants of both smartphones, but with radically different specifications. For starters, the cameras on the Reno12 Pro is radically different from the vanilla Reno12. Plus, both phones use a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 SoC instead of the Dimensity 8250 (Reno12) and Dimensity 9200+ (Reno12 Pro).
Starting with the Oppo Reno12 Pro, you get a 50 MP Sony LYT600 wide-angle lens (1/96" sensor, f/1.8, OIS), a 50 MP Samsung ISOCELL JN5 telephoto lens (2x optical zoom, 20x hybrid zoom) and an 8 MP Sony IMX355 ultra-wide-angle lens. The tri-camera setup is supplemented by a 50 MP selfie camera.
The Oppo Reno12 keeps the Reno12 Pro's LYT600 50 MP wide-angle lens and 8MP Sony IMX355 ultra-wide-angle lens. However, the third sensor is a lackluster 2 MP Omnivision OV02B10 macro lens. Furthermore, it downgrades the Reno12 Pro's 50 MP selfie camera with a 32 MP sensor. Otherwise, both devices are largely identical. 4K 30 FPS video recording is supported via the front and rear cameras on both smartphones.
The Oppo Reno12 and Reno12 Pro come with a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel clocked at 120 Hz, a peak brightness of 1,200 nits and HDR10+ certification. Oppo says it can dynamically adjust the refresh rate between 60/90/120 Hz based on the content displayed. While the panel does use PWM at lower brightness, it happens at 2,160 Hz, meaning it shouldn't affect most users. The quad-curved display can also operate with water droplets on it thanks to Oppo's Splash Touch. A layer of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects the display.
Oppo has also included a ton of AI-powered features with the Reno12 and Reno12 Pro. You get AI Eraser 2.0- essentially Oppo's take on Google Magic Eraser, AI Clear Face/Best Face that helps enhance facial features, AI Studio that lets you superimpose your photos into different themes, and AI Toolbox, which consists of AI Writer and AI Speak, and AI Summary.
As mentioned earlier, the Oppo Reno12 Pro and Reno12 come with a MediaTek SoC. Oppo calls it the Dimensity 7300 Energy, which comes with the company's Trinity Engine. It uses the 'power of AI' to dynamically allocate resources to apps. Other improvements include AI Linkboost for enhanced network connectivity, 360-degree NFC, and BeaconLink for faster Bluetooth. Lastly, the Oppo Reno12 Pro and Reno12 come with a 5,000 mAh that supports 80 Watt SuperVOOC fast charging with a proprietary charger. USB-PD peripherals can charge the smartphone at up to 55 Watts.
The Oppo Reno12 Pro will start at EUR 599, while the regular Reno12 will cost EUR 499. This gets you 12 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. You can expand the latter via a microSD card.
