We've previously reported on leaks of an upcoming electric Porsche Boxster, and Porsche has previously committed to EVs making up 80% of sales by 2030 and confirmed that electric Boxster and Cayman models would be introduced alongside its regular petrol-powered performance cars. Now, a supposed Porsche dealership document has leaked on X (formerly Twitter), claiming that the 982 platform — the internal name for the 718 family — that underpins both the Boxster and Cayman will no longer be produced after October 2025.
Previous rumours suggested that Porsche would release the upcoming electric Boxster and Cayman EVs in 2025, and the ever-increasing stream of spy shots of the Boxster EV undergoing road testing seem to substantiate these rumours.
The current-gen Porsche 718 platform is a lightweight mid-engine sports car, meaning that, although handling characteristics will be similar for an EV variant, getting the weight down may be challenging for Porsche to achieve. Previously, numbers extrapolated from a video clip of a Boxster EV at a charging station indicated that a battery pack somewhere in the region of 80 kWh — around the same capacity as the Taycan — was likely.
The supposed leaked Porsche document doesn't actually provide an indication of when the new EV Boxster and Cayman replacements are due.
"End of production for all 982 models is currently planned for October 2025."
That said, it's unlikely that Porsche will let that recently retooled factory space sit idle while it develops the next-generation Boxster and Cayman, lending credence to a potential 2025 announcement or start of production for the electric Boxster and Cayman.
