商业周刊:开源代码趋成熟_MySQL

  【eNet硅谷动力消息】就在18个月以前,John Roberts、Clint Oram和Jacob Taylor决定辞去其在CRM软件公司Epiphany的工作。这三个软件开发人员试图开发出一个基于开放源代码方式的CRM软件系统。他们仅仅花费了三个月的时间就完成了这一软件系统的开发,而且也仅仅用了一个月的时间就获得了首轮风险融资。一年以后,这三个软件人员的公司SugarCRM赠送出了32万5千套软件系统,并获得其第二轮风险融资775万美元。

  风险投资公司一般不会青睐于采用赠送方式的软件业务模式,但是为何对SugarCRM公司的运作方式情由独钟了?该公司的首席执行官John Roberts揭开了这个谜底:开放源代码运动的下一个趋势是进军商业软件市场,而我们正在处于这一趋势的中心,此前获得风险投资的开放源代码公司均从事基础设施软件开发,而我们现在打破了这一游戏规则。

  开放源代码正在为下一个热潮蓄势待发。企业、投资家和和许多分析家都充满对开放源代码商业软件市场充满信心,这一上亿美元规模的软件市场即将如同火山喷发。

  在过去的18个月间,风险投资公司在50家源代码软件公司总共投入了接近4亿美元的资金,而且在接下来的日子有望投入更多。与非开放源代码软件市场相比,这笔投资可能算不了什么,但是可以肯定这些开放源代码软件公司运作资金会相当充足,因为它们不想要招聘太多的销售人员和工程师,开放源代码社区会帮助它们。

  投资者已经资助了一系列的新兴开放源代码企业从宽泛的商业应用如监控企业运作的商业智能软件系统到专业的商业应用如医院计算机系统。投资者表示,任何一个开放源代码软件公司都有可能改变由诸如SAP、微软和甲骨文所垄断的商业应用软件市场。那些企业用户曾经耗费巨资购买的软件系统现在完全可以通过互联网免费下载到类似功能的开放源代码产品,企业IT主管们下载可以自由地通过互联网免费下载操作系统或者应用软件,而无需为之准备高额的财政预算。而且由于这些产品是开放源代码的,用户完全可以依据自己的需求对软件代码进行修改定制。

  无疑一个开放源代码生态系统正在浮出水面:现在开放源代码不再仅仅局限于诸如操作系统之类的基础性软件产品,随着更多的开源公司进入应用软件市场,开放源代码之路将越来越宽阔,而这刺激了更多的开放源代码软件服务公司的涌现。

  SpikeSource和SourceLabs就是两家为企业用户提供开放源代码项目测试、评估等服务的咨询公司,它们向企业用户提供如何部署开放源代码软件的建议,病提供必要的技术服务支持。而为了避免不必要的法律纠纷,针对开放源代码软件提供法律咨询服务的公司应运而生,BlackDuck就是这样的公司,它帮助那些下载开放源代码的企业用户避免不必要的法律纠纷。

  1991年问世的Linux操作系统引发了开放源代码软件运动的第一轮热潮,这个由成千上万志愿者开发的操作系统在490亿美元的服务器市场已经占据了42亿美元的份额,并有望在今后五年至少以每年15%的速度增长。

  在网页浏览器市场,开放源代码浏览器软件Firefox已经占据了8%的份额。尽管这依然无法和微软IE浏览器87的份额相提并论,但是Firefox的份额却在稳定增长,而且首次将IE的市场份额压缩到了90%以下,让微软低下了高贵的头。

  在基础设施软件市场也掀起了开源的热潮。MySQL开始挑战甲骨文的数据库业务,Jboss开始与BEA和IBM公司同台竞技应用服务器市场。尽管到目前为止,这些基础设施软件公司大多数为小型私立公司,但是其收入却在以每年两倍甚至三倍的速度增长。

  更让人印象深刻的是,这些公司大多数已经实现了赢利,低成本的开源业务无疑是其赢利的关键。分析家预计MySQL公司的赢利将在今年达到4000万美元。

  RightNow科技公司的首席执行官表示,我们是MySQL公司的一个大客户,开放源代码软件系统的采用让我们削减了可观的成本,目前其IT开支已经从先前收入的40%削减为目前的6%。

  开放源代码软件市场正在散发出诱人的魅力。许多风险投资家如此急切寻找到开放源代码市场的下一桶金,以至于他们直接在网站上表达了和源代码项目合作的意愿,试图寻找到任何能够繁荣的软件领域。

  与此同时,创业者的心情也同样迫切。开源让这些创业者有了和微软之类的巨头同台竞技的机会。Sevin Rosen基金在投资了新兴开源软件公司XenSource之后,超过30个企业家和创业者来到这个投资机构,阐述了基于开源模式的创业理念。

  这家投资机构的合伙人表示,公司并没有资助大多数的创业者,尽管越来越多的风险投资涌入开放源代码软件市场,但是到目前为止这一市场缺乏足够的增长机遇。

  当然这些开源软件企业能否顺利成长还很难说,大多数公司依然通过互联网赠送其产品,然后通过培训、维护和支持服务获得收入。但是能否获得持续收入将是一个挑战。尽管开放源代码软件公司的产品被下载的次数以成百上千计算,但是实际上平均只有2的用户带来正在的收入。分析家警告,毕竟每家开源软件公司的产品都能被其它公司轻易复制。另外,由于免费这一重要因素,越来越多的企业用户才开始尝试开源软件。

  不过开放源代码模式有其与生居来的优势,互联网和开源社区让这些公司无需耗费昂贵的销售和组织管理成本,它们不想要聘用经验丰富但薪酬不菲的销售人员,也无需为了和企业用户的CIO打交道而耗费资金和时间,这些开源公司所做的仅仅是把代码放在互联网上。

  由于成本很低,许多开放源代码公司根本就无需风险投资的介入,两家资历最老而且最为成功的开源应用软件公司Digium和Compiere从来就没有进行过任何融资,而且它们也不需要。也许它们不会发展到年收入10亿美元的规模,但是在开放源代码市场已经闯出了一片天空。

  Compiere公司主要从事开源ERP软件开发,而这一软件系统的开发极具挑战性,因为ERP软件系统几乎是企业运作的核心,从公司的财务、人力资源到生产制造均在ERP系统规划之内。自从该公司199年推出ERP软件系统以来,其下载次数已经达到了90万次,并在中小型企业用户市场找到了出路。

  不过如何,随着开源源代码软件生态圈的形成,开源软件进入主流市场将是指日可待了。(方恺
