News on April 13, Western Digital recently launched the Ultrastar Transporter storage solution. It was originally designed to solve the problem of big data transmission. It has a built-in solid state drive of up to 368TB, and the weight of the entire device just reaches 13 to 15 kg.
Ultrastar Transporter can meet the large data storage needs of film crews and other scenes when data is relocated, network connection speed is limited, or transmission costs are high. This device is called "portable", but it is not actually suitable for easy portable use. At peak operating conditions, it consumes up to 1,300 watts of power and is so bulky that a 19-inch rack needs to be installed two devices high.
Regarding the weight of the device, the data provided by Western Digital is slightly different. According to the datasheet, its weight is close to 15 kilograms, which is about 33 pounds. However, in the product description and official announcement, it is stated that its weight is about 13 kilograms, slightly less than 29 pounds. This difference may stem from the weight of the device's external case.
Ultrastar transporter uses advanced network connection technology. It implements 200GbE high-speed network connection through two QSFP112 ports, ensuring that data can be quickly provided or collected in the field. In addition, the device is equipped with a 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection port, further enhancing the flexibility and stability of its network connection. With enhanced network connectivity, Ultrastar transporter's reliability and accuracy have been further improved.
However, Western Digital has not yet announced the price and specific launch date of Ultrastar Transporter.
