There are rumors that Apple may launch a new iPad stylus this year. Although it has not yet been officially confirmed, it is said that Apple Pencil 3 may have a new "Find My" function and an improved pen tip replacement mechanism.
When will Apple Pencil 3 be released?
Every existing Apple Pencil device was released in November of their respective year. An Apple Pencil 3 release date may also follow. At the moment, though, we can't say for sure if that will happen this year or if Apple will wait longer.
We actually expect the next generation Apple Pencil to launch in 2021. You can see why by looking at the previous release dates:
First generation: November 11, 2015 Second generation: November 7, 2018Apple did not continue the three-year release cycle, but in 2023 The USB-C Apple Pencil was delivered to us in November. However, considering the rumors we've already seen, we expect the third-generation Apple Pencil to launch soon.
Next Apple Event: Dates, News, Rumors & Announcements
Lifewire Release Date Expected
We're looking at the Apple Pencil 3 in March. Much like the previous two generations, this one will likely launch alongside the upcoming iPad Pro.
Apple Pencil 3 Price Rumors
The next-generation Apple Pencil will likely cost $129, the same price as the Apple Pencil 2 (the Apple Pencil will definitely be discounted once the third-generation Pencil launches).
Pre-order information
Apple Pencil 3 is still just a rumor. Once it's available, you'll be able to purchase it from the Apple Store.
Apple Pencil 3 Features and Hardware
One new feature we’re excited about is Find My Support. 9to5Mac reports on this after spotting references to the new Apple Pencil in an iPadOS beta. If it arrives, you'll be able to use the Find My app to not only find your iPad and other Apple products like watches and phones, but also your new Apple Pencil.
We can also see the ability to change the prompt with an alternative that is more suitable for a specific task. For example, if you are creating a digital painting, a thicker nib may be helpful, while a long, thin nib may be useful for creating fine, pencil-like strokes. No source provided, but X user Majin Bu says this will work via a magnetic tip. The current Apple Pencil also has a replaceable tip, but it requires unscrewing the tip to use it and doesn't offer different tip shapes.
As for colors, we’d like to see some new options. White does look nice, but since 2015 it has been the only option. Available in black, gray, or gold, it pairs perfectly with other new Apple products expected this year.
The latest Apple Pencil is not pressure sensitive, so you can create different strokes based on how hard you press the screen. It's worth noting, though, that the latest Pencil is a USB-C model, which is slightly different from the first and second-generation Apple Pencil. There is no doubt that this feature will return in the third generation of Apple Pencil.
A patent published in 2020 gives us a glimpse into what Apple designers envision for the future of stylus. The idea is to have the device sample colors from the real world so that you can use those colors on your computer (or iPad, if that describes the Apple Pencil) to help with color matching. Essentially, it's like any color picker or eyedropper tool you'd use in an image editing application, except it works in the physical world.
We're not sure if this technology will make it to Apple Pencil 3 in time, but you never know! You can read more about this and see some other drawings in Google Patents: Computer Systems with Color Sampling Stylus .
Apple Pencil 3 Compatibility
The two existing Apple Pencil devices work with different iPad models. The next-generation Apple Pencil will be compatible with the latest and greatest iPads, but which models are unclear.
If we had to guess, the Apple Pencil 3 will work with the same iPads supported by the second-generation Pencil:
iPad mini (6th generation) iPad Air (4th generation and above) iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later) iPad Pro 11-inch (all generations)How to know which iPad you have
