Samsung Display announced that it has begun construction of a new 8.6-generation IT organic light-emitting diode (OLED) production line, aiming to consolidate its leadership in the global flat panel display market.
According to the plan, Samsung Display will transform the existing L8 production line at the central Asan plant into an A6 production line to produce IT equipment in addition to smartphones. 8.6 generation OLED panel. This will be Samsung Display’s sixth OLED production line, with major equipment planned to be installed this year and mass production to begin in 2026.
According to our understanding, the "generation line" referred to by the 8.6 generation is mainly the code name of the substrate size. The larger the size, the stronger the ability to produce large-size screens or mass-produce small-size screens. This technology can meet the needs of producing large-size screens while significantly improving production efficiency.
In November last year, domestic manufacturer BOE announced that it planned to invest in the construction of BOE’s 8.6th generation AMOLED production line project in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. This is also the first 8.6th generation AMOLED production line in China.
According to official disclosures, BOE’s project covers an area of 925,200 square meters (note on this site: Contract 1,388 acres), total investment is 63 billion yuan, and the project company’s registered capital is 38 billion yuan. Among them, BOE raised 19.9994 billion yuan, the first phase of heavy industry raised 9.0003 billion yuan, and the electronics company raised 9.0003 billion yuan. The difference between the total project investment and the registered capital was partly settled through external financing of the project company.
The G8.6 (glass substrate size 2,290mm2,620mm) production line constructed by BOE will further improve the backplane based on the existing G6 (glass substrate size 1,500mm1,850mm) OLED production line technology. Compared with the OLED light-emitting device preparation process, products using this technology have lower power consumption and longer life than the previous generation products. Due to the larger size of the substrate in this project, the slicing efficiency is higher and the production cost will be lower.
