Japanese media focus on Apple iPhone sales plummeting in China: Huawei is the reason
Recently, CNMO noticed that Japanese media reported that iPhone sales in China fell by 24%, and competition with Chinese mobile phone manufacturers such as Huawei has intensified.
According to a report released by Hong Kong market research company Counterpoint, within six consecutive weeks in early 2024, Apple iPhone sales in the Chinese market decreased by 24% year-on-year. This data reflects the increasingly fierce competition Apple faces in the Chinese market, especially with local brands such as Huawei.
On the day the report was released, Apple’s stock price fell by about 3% in the U.S. stock market, showing market concerns about its poor performance in China. Data from Counterpoint also showed that total smartphone sales in the Chinese market fell by 7% year-on-year. Against this background, despite double-digit sales declines from major manufacturers such as Apple, OPPO, and vivo, Huawei's new "Mate60" series of mobile phones achieved a year-on-year growth of 64%.
Regarding Apple’s sales decline, Counterpoint analysis believes that the iPhone 15 released in September 2023 did not bring significant innovation, leading consumers to believe that continuing to use older models can meet their needs. In addition, due to declining sales in the Chinese market, Apple had to implement a limited-time price reduction strategy in January to boost sales.
At the same time, local Chinese smartphone manufacturers are actively launching products equipped with new features such as generative AI and photo editing to attract consumers. Manufacturers such as Honor and Vivo are making frequent moves in the AI field. Although Apple plans to announce its generative AI strategy within 2024, the market generally believes that its layout in this area has lagged behind its competitors. After entering 2024, Apple's stock price continues to be sluggish, and its total market value has been surpassed by Microsoft Corporation of the United States.
