When executing Esxcli commands, VMWare users may encounter warnings stating that the core dump target is not configured and the host core dump cannot be saved. This issue has been noted to occur after updating the console version. This article explores this problem and proposes a solution.

Fix not configured core dump target, unable to save host core dump

In VMWare, if the host core dump cannot be saved because the core dump target is not configured when running the Esxcli command or modifying the disk, you can follow the following solutions to solve it.

  • Create a dump file for your ESXi host
  • Enable core dumps on USB and create partitions
  • Disable warning
  • Let’s talk about it in detail.

1]Create a dump file for your ESXi host

If you use iSCSI storage for ESXi hosts (including booting from a SAN), you must create dump files for them.

First, you have to create an empty dump file using the below mentioned command.

    Esxcli系统核心转储文件添加-d*you_datastore_name*-f*the_umpfile_name(我使用ESXi主机名)*

Then, configure the newly created file as an active dump file.

    Esxcli系统核心转储文件集-p/vmfs/volumes/*your_datastore_name*/vmkdump/*the_dumpfile_name*.dumpfile

Finally, run the below mentioned command to confirm the dump file.

    Esxcli系统核心转储文件列表

You will receive an event notifying you that the core dump has been set, and your warning will disappear.

2] Enable core dump on USB and create partition

If you are using USB, you need to enable core dumps on it and create a partition. To perform the same, you need to follow the steps mentioned below.

  • First, go to Warnings, then Configure System >Advanced System Settings.
  • Now, click on the Edit button and then filter using the keyword VMkernel.Boot.Allow and find VMkernel.Boot.AllowCoreDumpOnUsb.
  • You must then change the value associated with VMkernel.Boot.lowCoreDumpOnUsb to True.
  • After connecting to the host via SSH, use the command 'esxcli storage file system list' to find available local storage locations of type VMFS-L.
  • Then run the following command.
    Esxcli系统核心转储文件添加-d数据存储区-f主机名-S 2000
  • Run esxcli system core dump file list to confirm whether the core dump file has been created.
  • If active, you can run the command -esxcli system core dump file set -S -e=True if it shows false. But it will set it to True.
  • This will do the job for you. However, we will still try to connect to the host via SSH and search for available storage locations. Follow the steps mentioned below.

    • First, run the command mentioned below.
      Esxcli存储文件系统列表
    • Run the below mentioned command to create core dump file. Make sure to replace the datastore and hostname in the command mentioned below.
      Esxcli系统核心转储文件添加-d数据存储区-f主机名-S 2000
    • Execute this command to check whether the core dump file is created.
      Esxcli系统核心转储文件列表
    • Finally, run the below mentioned command to enable the core dump file.
      esxtool系统核心转储文件集-s -e=True

Hopefully, this will do the trick for you.

What is a core dump file VMware?

Core dumps are useful for debugging and analyzing ESX hosts that may have crashed due to kernel panic. You can recognize a kernel panic by the appearance of a purple screen, also known as PSOD (similar to Windows' "Blue Screen of Death"). Starting with VMWare ESX 5.5, users can create core dumps to files instead of partitions, which provides greater flexibility and convenience.
