Vision Pro pre-sales are being snapped up like crazy, and sales will definitely not be bad.
But 160,000-180,000 units were sold in one weekend, which is still far beyond everyone’s imagination.
After all, the unit price of Vision Pro is US$3,499. It is estimated that Apple earned approximately US$560-630 million last weekend.
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s prediction, it will not be a problem to sell 500,000 Vision Pro units this year.
But after the promising numbers, Kuo Ming-chi poured cold water on it: Vision Pro’s hidden worries emerged.
What on earth is this...?
Vision Pro is still a niche product
Ming-Chi Kuo based his estimate on the estimated waiting time given after ordering Vision Pro on Apple’s official website .
He said that a few hours after the pre-sale started, the estimated delivery time of Vision Pro was extended to 5-7 weeks, which means that all existing stocks were sold, and the sales volume in a weekend was about 16- 180,000 units.
However, it remains unchanged within 48 hours of the pre-sale opening, which is the main reason why Ming-Chi Kuo raised concerns.
Comparing the sales situation of iPhone, if it is a more popular model, it usually takes 24-48 hours after the pre-sale starts. As time goes by, the delivery time will also increase. It will continue to be extended, which means that user demand is still increasing.
The current sales situation of Vision Pro means that after core fans and heavy users place orders, the number of people buying Vision Pro decreases rapidly.
Previously, some media said that assembly plants would work overtime during the Spring Festival, and inferred that the demand for Vision Pro was higher than expected. Ming-Chi Kuo believes that this is not the case. The production efficiency of Vision Pro has never been high. From the beginning of mass production to now, it has been working full-time overtime production.
However, Apple has a huge active user base of more than 1.2 billion. As long as 0.007% of users are willing to purchase, the Vision Pro pre-sale will be sold out.
Therefore, even though Vision Pro is still a very niche product, it is also very niche for Apple.
Wall Street analysts believe that the $3,499 Vision Pro will not immediately bring significant revenue growth to Apple. They are observing the mass market acceptance and growth potential of this new product.
Application ecology and plug-in battery also cause concerns
In addition to the market, there are also many concerns about the experience and ecology of Vision Pro itself.
On the one hand, despite relying on Apple’s powerful application ecosystem, the applications connected to Vision Pro are still not enough.
According to Appfigures data, there are only more than 150 apps in the APP Store that are explicitly upgraded to Vision Pro, which is a very small part of the 1.8 million apps.
For example, Netflix, YouTube, etc. do not specifically develop local applications for Vision Pro. A YouTube spokesperson also made it clear that YouTube’s iPad app will not support Vision Pro. If you want to use it, you can only open Safari and access it from the web.
APP Store data shows that application developers’ response to Apple’s entry into XR has been tepid.
There are several reasons why developers are unwilling to specialize in development:
First, the number of Vision Pros used for testing is limited; secondly, there are not enough opportunities for applications to surface on Vision Pro many.
and the previous lawsuit between Apple and Epic Game may have caused a "chilling effect" among the developer community.
Apple tells developers that they can edit app availability in App Store Connect to make their iPhone and iPad apps automatically available to Vision Pro users. This is possible because Vision Pro apps run using the same frameworks, resources and libraries as iOS and iPadOS.
Now it is very likely that many application developers will choose to wait and see until the user base of Vision Pro is large enough, and then the APP will be ported to Vision Pro.
On the other hand, the weight of Vision Pro itself and the external battery will affect the actual experience.
Especially for external batteries, this existence is minimized as much as possible in Apple’s promotional videos.
Wired reporters revealed that many photos of reporters sitting on the sofa experiencing Vision Pro were taken by Apple officials, and the batteries were cropped out of these photos.
This makes people wonder, how does Apple envision users using this product? Does the existence of an external battery conflict with the ideal usage scenario?
At least for now, Vision Pro is not very portable, and various official displays are mainly for seated use.
This is a bit contradictory to Apple’s long-standing technical route. Whether it is iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch, they can be carried around and used by users wherever they go.
In short, before ordinary consumers can actually get Vision Pro, the estimates from all parties are not very optimistic.
