Ethereum Dencun Cancun upgraded and launched Goerli test network, two major problems occurred

On December 22 last year, Ethereum core developer Tim Beiko announced on X that Dencun, the next major upgrade of Ethereum, will first be launched on the Goerli testnet on January 17 start up. Subsequently, the Sepolia and Holesky test networks are expected to be initially finalized on January 30 and February 7 respectively. If the upgrade of these three testnets goes smoothly, the mainnet Dencun upgrade is expected to arrive as soon as the end of February.

Tim Beiko announced on X today that the Ethereum Goerli testnet has completed the Dencun hard fork upgrade. He said that although the number of validators participating in the upgrade was small, this was expected. Some blobs have been transferred so far, but most of the transferred blobs are empty.

Blobs are a new transaction format introduced by EIP-4844 (protodanksharding) and are designed to increase Ethereum’s data storage capacity. This transaction format can be used to temporarily store transaction data and can be deleted after 18 days. By increasing data storage capacity, Ethereum has the potential to further reduce transaction fees on second-layer networks.

Tim Beiko said that if more validators do not participate in the upgrade, non-final tests may be conducted to understand how the network operates with low validator participation.

In addition, Tim Beiko pointed out that there has been a fork problem recently, that is, different nodes or validators have different versions of the blockchain transaction history. The development team is investigating this issue and will provide more details at a later date.

In short, Dencun faced some challenges when upgrading the Goerli testnet, such as low participation and forking issues. Therefore, further testing and investigation is required by the development team.

Goerli testnet upgrade has attracted much attention

The Goerli testnet has attracted much attention because it is the testnet with the highest number of participants and network load after the Ethereum mainnet. Recently, the Dencun upgrade was successfully launched in Goerli, which marks that the day when the Ethereum mainnet officially launches the Dencun upgrade is getting closer. The success of this upgrade has attracted widespread attention in the industry.

Some developers expressed concern that the upgrade interval between the Goerli testnet and the Sepolia testnet was too short, fearing that there was not enough time to observe potential problems, resulting in upgrade failure. In response to this concern, X account Lightclients stated that the Ethereum Core Developer Executive Conference (ACDE) #179 is scheduled to be held tomorrow. If any issues arise on the Goerli testnet within 24 hours of the upgrade, the developers will have the opportunity to review the follow-up schedule.

In addition, Dencun will be the last upgrade of the Goerli testnet. After the mainnet launches the Dencun upgrade, the client and the Ethereum Foundation test team will stop supporting the Goerli testnet. For more information, please refer to the Ethereum Foundation article.
