According to news on January 15, it can be confirmed that Arm is developing a new generation of Cortex-X CPU core (ultra-large core), code-named "Blackhawk" (Blackhawk), and is expected to be named Cortex-X5.
This new core is one of the priorities of Arm CEO Rene Haas. The goal is to narrow the gap with Apple's self-developed CPU core as much as possible, or even surpass it.
Apple’s self-developed core is actually an Arm instruction set, but with its superior design capabilities and ecosystem, its performance is better than the Arm public version.
According to Arm’s expectations, Cortex-X5 will bring huge performance improvements and achieve the largest IPC improvement in five years.
Interestingly, the existing ultra-large core Cortex-X4 was also known as the "fastest Arm CPU ever" when it was released, with a performance improvement of 15% and a power consumption reduction of 40% compared to the previous generation.
Cortex-X5 is expected to be commercially available at the end of 2024 or early 2025 and will compete with Apple A18 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen4.
Among them, Snapdragon 8 Gen4 will be Qualcomm’s self-developed CPU core based on the Arm instruction set.
