Rec Room launches full-body Avatar option to enhance social experience in AR/VR metaverse

(Nweon January 11, 2024) The famous metaverse social application Rec Room recently announced that it will soon launch a new full-body Avatar option. Users will have the opportunity to choose to stick with a standard floating half-body, or experience a more realistic full avatar. This move will further enhance users’ immersion and social experience, and bring them more diverse ways to interact in virtual spaces. Rec Room looks forward to users’ love and active participation in new features.

Please note that full-body Avatar is not full-body tracking. Currently, the team uses the inverse kinematics IK system to achieve related effects, but it does not truly achieve full-body tracking. While full-body tracking will be supported in the future, there's currently no firm timeline.

The team plans to make the new full-body Avatar option available to users as a beta feature by March 2024. This new option is not intended to completely replace the old floating bust, but rather serves as a new option that users can choose from in the customization menu. The studio emphasizes that the new full-body Avatar will be fully compatible with users' existing items.

In addition, the full-body Avatar will first be supplied to players at level 50, which means experienced players can use it first, but the development team stated that it will also be open to low-level players during the testing process.

The team said: "We first collect feedback from experienced players before expanding to novices."

According to reports, the March beta update will introduce a new inverse kinematics IK system. The team said that in order to achieve full-body Avatar, they have updated and improved the system. Happily, Rec Room plans to support half-body floating functionality indefinitely.

The studio noted that Rec Room plans to enable full-body tracking in the future, but did not specify supported devices or a timeline. In addition, finger tracking is also planned, but it will not be available in the March beta.
