April 13th is the release day of Ubuntu 17.04. Of course, there is a time difference. We in the Eastern Hemisphere will not see the official version release until the 14th, which means you can download Ubuntu 17.04 today!
Ubuntu is the most popular desktop system. The download volume on the day of release is quite large. The official download speed is sometimes very slow because of this. We can choose to wait for the domestic mirror synchronization to be completed before downloading the domestic mirror or download it later. .
If you plan to manually upgrade Ubuntu 16.10 to 17.04, you can initiate the upgrade now, but keep in mind that it may be slow as thousands of other users will be trying to do the same thing.
For users who are not in a hurry, just wait until the new release notification appears on your desktop, so the update will be better.
Ubuntu 17.04 Preview
This is not the official version of Ubuntu desktop. This may be the last version of the Unity 7 desktop default configuration. Not sure of course, we know Ubuntu will switch to GNOME with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS next year. In the next interim version, hopefully developers can make Gnome the default in advance.
Then, after giving up Unity 8, this version seems a bit useless. The Ubuntu 17.04 release code name has reached the end of the alphabet, does it mean the end of an era?
The changes are not big, and the uniformity is generally the same as 16.04 LTS.
Swap file (SWAP)
New installations of Ubuntu 17.04 will no longer require a swap partition. On modern systems with more memory, this doesn't make sense.
So, instead, Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty Zapus uses swap files by default. Swap files are sized differently than swap partitions, typically using no more than 5% of available disk space (or 2048MB of RAM), which is another potential benefit.
Linux Kernel 4.10
Ubuntu 17.04 includes Linux kernel 4.10, which is great news for anyone who wants to run the version on AMD Ryzen or Intel Kaby Lake systems. Gamers also prefer using MESA 17.0.2, which also uses X.Org Server 1.19.2 by default.
Default application
Ubuntu's core applications have been significantly updated.
There's the latest LibreOffice 5.3 (which means the "ribbon" interface can be enabled); the default calendar app can pick up a convenient week view; Firefox and Thunderbird are also pushing their latest stable versions.
With most of Zesty using GNOME 3.24, you also get new versions of many other applications and tools, in addition to the stock terminal emulator (version v3.20), Nautilus file manager (v3.20) and Ubuntu software (at v3.22, but with some additional features like Snap URL support).
Firefox 52Thunderbird 45LibreOffice 5.3Nautilus 3.20.4Rhythmbox 3.4.1 default new wallpaper
Other Miscellaneous Changes The default DNS resolver is now resolved by the system, gconf is no longer installed by default and has been replaced by gsettings.
Summary Ubuntu 17.04 is an iterative update (9 months of support), which is not very attractive. This is not an insignificant release for anyone running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS who has no reason to upgrade (especially for those who have chosen to receive newer hardware-enabled stacks).
Ubuntu 16.10 users will want to upgrade to Ubuntu 17.04 for general improvements and access to newer applications.
For users of other Linux distributions, it may come as no surprise other than that your distribution of choice does not offer timely updates or newer kernel versions that you feel you really need.
