MATA, an artificial intelligence assistant for scientific data research, receives patent recognition
Researchers at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that they have obtained a patent for MATA. MATA is an artificial intelligence research assistant that can answer questions related to scientific data Assistant asks questions. These chatbots are trained with general knowledge about the world and current events.
MATA works similarly to Alexa and Siri, but it is trained on vast amounts of Earth science data collected by NASA. Specifically, MATA, which means Earth in Sanskrit, was trained using hundreds of terabytes of land, ocean and space sensor data collected by NASA over the past 40 years. The patent was awarded to Jia Zhang, interim chair and professor of computer science in SMU’s Lyell College of Engineering, and her NASA collaborators. She led the development of MATA to simplify scientists' ability to access and share data.
