News from this site on October 25, according to Korean media The Elec, Samsung Display is exploring a new OLED panel production process, The focus is on bypassing the fine metal mask (FMM).
It is reported that Samsung Display participated in the Society of Information Display event held in May this year, which was triggered after demonstrating new production technology for OLED panels.
Note from this site: The fine metal mask is a consumable core component in the OLED evaporation process. Its main role is in the OLED production process. Deposit RGB organic substances and form pixels, deposit organic substances accurately and finely where needed, and improve product resolution and yield.
The higher the resolution and the greater the number of pixels, the more fine and delicate holes are required. There are about 20 million holes on a metal mask, making the process more difficult.
All OLED panels currently used in smartphones and smartwatches use fine metal masks in the production process, and the industry’s largest supplier is Dai Nippon Printing.
Fine metal masks present many process challenges and are not suitable for producing OLED panels larger than 15-17 inches. The current yield rate of FMM's production of 6-inch OLED panels is only about 30%, and the yield rate of larger panels will inevitably be lower.
Therefore, the OLED panel size of 17 inches to 30 inches is a new area for display panel manufacturers, and it is also a considerable headache for them to choose which production technology.
There has been talk of OLED panel production without FMMs for the past five years, but JDI’s introduction of eLEAP technology last year has increased interest.
Japan’s Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) has also applied for a patent related to the production of OLED panels without using FMM; while another one comes from Visionox, called Visionox Intelligent Pixelisation (ViP).
Internal sources stated that Samsung Display has shown interest in such technology, but it is still under consideration due to obtaining technology patents. The company has a habit of completely controlling the market when entering new markets by acquiring all relevant patents and technologies to prevent competitors from entering.
