Samsung leads innovation in the global PC field: releasing the first removable LPCAMM memory
News on September 26, Samsung Electronics recently announced that they have successfully developed a new low-power compressed add-on memory module (LPCAMM), with a transmission rate of 7.5Gbps, equivalent to 0.9375GB/s. This technological breakthrough is expected to completely change the DRAM market structure for personal computers, laptops, and data centers.
Traditionally, personal computers and laptops usually use LPDDR DRAM or DDR-based So-DIMM memory modules. However, both techniques have some limitations. LPDDR needs to be installed directly on the device's motherboard, which means replacement becomes complicated during repairs or upgrades. In contrast, although So-DIMM memory modules are more convenient to install and remove, they also have some limitations in terms of performance, power consumption and other physical characteristics
However, as the demand for more efficient and compact devices continues to increase, LPCAMM technology is expected to overcome the limitations of both LPDDR and So-DIMM. This removable memory module provides PC and laptop manufacturers with greater flexibility. In addition, LPCAMM can take up to 60% less space on the motherboard than So-DIMM. This not only makes more effective use of the internal space of the device, but also improves performance and energy efficiency by 50% and 70% respectively.
According to the editor’s understanding, this breakthrough research and development result has been carried out on Intel platforms System verification. Samsung plans to work with major customers this year to apply LPCAMM technology to next-generation systems for testing, and plans to commercialize it to the market in 2024. This means that in the future we can expect to see more efficient and compact devices using this innovative memory module technology, significantly improving computer performance and energy efficiency
