How to use Nginx proxy server to implement WebSocket protocol support?

WebSocket is a full-duplex communication protocol based on TCP. It enables the server and client to conduct two-way communication in real time by establishing a communication channel in which both parties can maintain a long-term connection. It is suitable for real-time communication. , instant chat, real-time data push and other scenarios. When using WebSocket, we often need to configure the proxy server to forward WebSocket requests and responses. This article will introduce how to use the Nginx proxy server to implement support for the WebSocket protocol.

Step 1: Install Nginx

First, we need to ensure that Nginx is installed on the proxy server. If it is not installed, please choose the appropriate installation method according to the operating system.

Step 2: Modify the Nginx configuration file

Next, we need to modify the Nginx configuration file. Open the Nginx configuration file and add the following code in the http block:

map $http_upgrade $connection_upgrade {
    default upgrade;
    ''      close;
}

upstream backend {
    server 127.0.0.1:8080;
}

In the above code, the map directive is used to Upgrade in the request header The value of the field is mapped to the value of the $connection_upgrade variable. The upstream directive is used to define the address of the backend server. The local address 127.0.0.1:8080 is used here. You can modify it according to the actual situation.

Add the following code in the server block:

location /websocket {
    proxy_pass http://backend;
    proxy_http_version 1.1;
    proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
    proxy_set_header Connection $connection_upgrade;
}

In the above code, the location directive is used to match the path of the WebSocket request. The proxy_pass directive is used to forward the request to the backend server. The proxy_http_version directive is used to specify the version of the proxy protocol. The proxy_set_header directive is used to set the request header and forward the Upgrade and Connection fields to the backend server as they are.

Step 3: Restart the Nginx service

After completing the modification of the configuration file, save and close the file. Then, restart the Nginx service for the configuration to take effect. Enter the following command on the command line:

sudo service nginx restart

Step 4: Test the WebSocket connection

At this point, we have completed the configuration of Nginx. Next, we can use the WebSocket client tool or write a simple web application to test the WebSocket connection. Here is a simple sample code:

var ws = new WebSocket("ws://your_domain/websocket");

ws.onopen = function() {
    console.log("Connected to WebSocket");
};

ws.onmessage = function(event) {
    console.log("Received message: " + event.data);
};

ws.onclose = function() {
    console.log("Disconnected from WebSocket");
};

Save the above code as an HTML file, and then open the file in your browser. If you see the output of "Connected to WebSocket" in the browser's developer tools, it means that the WebSocket connection is successful.

Summary: Through the above steps, we successfully used the Nginx proxy server to implement support for the WebSocket protocol. In this way, we can use Nginx's powerful performance and flexible configuration to achieve more efficient and stable WebSocket communication. However, it should be noted that Nginx itself is not a WebSocket server. It is only used as a proxy server to forward WebSocket connections to the back-end server for processing. If you need to deploy a complete WebSocket server, we can consider using other dedicated WebSocket server software.

When would you use a trait versus an abstract class or interface in PHP?When would you use a trait versus an abstract class or interface in PHP?Apr 10, 2025 am 09:39 AM

In PHP, trait is suitable for situations where method reuse is required but not suitable for inheritance. 1) Trait allows multiplexing methods in classes to avoid multiple inheritance complexity. 2) When using trait, you need to pay attention to method conflicts, which can be resolved through the alternative and as keywords. 3) Overuse of trait should be avoided and its single responsibility should be maintained to optimize performance and improve code maintainability.

Dependency Injection Container (DIC) is a tool that manages and provides object dependencies for use in PHP projects. The main benefits of DIC include: 1. Decoupling, making components independent, and the code is easy to maintain and test; 2. Flexibility, easy to replace or modify dependencies; 3. Testability, convenient for injecting mock objects for unit testing.

SplFixedArray is a fixed-size array in PHP, suitable for scenarios where high performance and low memory usage are required. 1) It needs to specify the size when creating to avoid the overhead caused by dynamic adjustment. 2) Based on C language array, directly operates memory and fast access speed. 3) Suitable for large-scale data processing and memory-sensitive environments, but it needs to be used with caution because its size is fixed.

In JavaScript, you can use NullCoalescingOperator(??) and NullCoalescingAssignmentOperator(??=). 1.??Returns the first non-null or non-undefined operand. 2.??= Assign the variable to the value of the right operand, but only if the variable is null or undefined. These operators simplify code logic, improve readability and performance.

What is Content Security Policy (CSP) header and why is it important?What is Content Security Policy (CSP) header and why is it important?Apr 09, 2025 am 12:10 AM

CSP is important because it can prevent XSS attacks and limit resource loading, improving website security. 1.CSP is part of HTTP response headers, limiting malicious behavior through strict policies. 2. The basic usage is to only allow loading resources from the same origin. 3. Advanced usage can set more fine-grained strategies, such as allowing specific domain names to load scripts and styles. 4. Use Content-Security-Policy-Report-Only header to debug and optimize CSP policies.

HTTP request methods include GET, POST, PUT and DELETE, which are used to obtain, submit, update and delete resources respectively. 1. The GET method is used to obtain resources and is suitable for read operations. 2. The POST method is used to submit data and is often used to create new resources. 3. The PUT method is used to update resources and is suitable for complete updates. 4. The DELETE method is used to delete resources and is suitable for deletion operations.

HTTPS is a protocol that adds a security layer on the basis of HTTP, which mainly protects user privacy and data security through encrypted data. Its working principles include TLS handshake, certificate verification and encrypted communication. When implementing HTTPS, you need to pay attention to certificate management, performance impact and mixed content issues.

mPDF

mPDF

mPDF is a PHP library that can generate PDF files from UTF-8 encoded HTML. The original author, Ian Back, wrote mPDF to output PDF files "on the fly" from his website and handle different languages. It is slower than original scripts like HTML2FPDF and produces larger files when using Unicode fonts, but supports CSS styles etc. and has a lot of enhancements. Supports almost all languages, including RTL (Arabic and Hebrew) and CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Supports nested block-level elements (such as P, DIV),
