Python program to remove suffix from given string

In Python, we have some inbuilt string functions like rstrip(), replace() and endswith() which can be used to remove suffix from a given string . Removing a suffix is accomplished by removing a set of characters from the end of the string. Sometimes we find suffix error in the data and if we want to remove it it will take a lot of time and this problem can be solved by giving an algorithm. The characters or substrings at the end are called suffixes.

Let us take an example to understand this -

The given string variable is BRIGHTNING, removing the suffix NING will make the word BRIGHT.

grammar

endswith()

This is a predefined method in Python. If the string ends with the given value, it returns true, otherwise it returns false.

rstrip()

This is a predefined method used in Python to remove a given suffix character from the end of a string.

replace(“replace_string_var_name”,  “”)

This is a built-in method in Python that accepts two parameters −

  • replace_string_var_name − Mention the name of the variable.

  • Empty String - An empty string is represented by "", which stores the remaining substring of the given string.

algorithm

  • We are getting the input string variable.

  • Then we use the predefined method i.e. endswith with the input string variable using an if statement to get the suffix substring. Returns true if the substring is found to be the end, false otherwise. (Example 1 and Example 2)

  • Then we use the predefined method, which is the rstrip method using the input string variable. This method removes a string from the end of the string. (Example 3)

  • Then use the if statement to use the endswith() function to check the conditions for deleting the substring. (Example 4)

  • Continue to calculate the length of the suffix substring and perform the following operations -

    • str_name = str_name[:-len("car")] − With this representation, we describe the subtraction of the length of a given suffix substring. (Example 1)

    • str_name = str_name[:len(str_name)-len(suffix_name)] - With this representation, we subtract the length of the string from the given string. (Example 2)

    • Next, use the replace method to replace a specific given string and get the result. (Example 4)

    • So, this way we remove the suffix substring.

  • Finally, we print the result with the help of input string variable.

Example 1

is:

Example 1

In this program, we use a predefined function i.e. endswith() to set the suffix string into it and remove the length of the suffix by indicating - (minus sign) symbol and get the result.

str_name = "RANSOMEWARE"
if str_name.endswith("car"):
   str_name = str_name[ :-len("WARE") ]
print( "After deleting the given suffix:", str_name )

Output

After deleting the given suffix: RANSOME

Example 2

In this program, we use two variables - input string and suffix string, and then use the predefined function i.e. endswith() to set the suffix string. To remove the suffix substring, we subtract the length of the suffix variable from the total length of the given string variable.

str_name = "Doctorate"
suffix_name = "ate"
if str_name.endswith( suffix_name ):
   str_name = str_name[ :len(str_name)-len(suffix_name) ]
print( "After deleting the given suffix:", str_name )

Output

After deleting the given suffix: Doctor
The Chinese translation of

Example 3

is:

Example 3

In this program, we use predefined function rstrip() to remove suffix substring from the given string and get the result.

str_name = "Rectangle"
str_name = str_name.rstrip( "gle" )
print( "After deleting the given suffix:", str_name )

Output

After deleting the given suffix: Rectan
The Chinese translation of

Example 4

is:

Example 4

In the following example, we will start by storing the input string in the variable str_name. The deleted substring is then stored in the variable del_suffix. Then use if statement to check the condition for string deletion using built-in method endswith(). Next, use the replace method that accepts two parameters - del_suffix (to remove the substring) and "" (an empty string to store the remaining string). Then print the result with the help of variable del_suffix.

str_name = "abcdefghi"
del_suffix = "ghi"
if str_name.endswith(del_suffix):
   str_name = str_name.replace(del_suffix, "")
print("After delete the substring from the given string:",str_name)

Output

After deleting the substring from the given string: abcdef

in conclusion

We explored the concept of removing suffix substrings from a given string. We see that there are 3 examples of this program, with different solution methods, using length operations and predefined methods respectively. Such programs are often used to remove multiple words ending with the same suffix.
