News on June 26, Stephan, CEO of Automobili Lamborghini Winkelmann recently revealed to foreign media Autocar that the company plans to launch a plug-in hybrid version of its flagship SUV model Urus in 2024 to replace the current cash model equipped with a V8 engine. It is reported that the model will use a plug-in hybrid system composed of a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbocharged engine and an electric motor, with a combined power of up to 603 kilowatts and a pure electric cruising range of about 500 kilometers.
Winkelmann pointed out that future EU legislation will make it "almost impossible" for fuel vehicles to continue to be sold, even if these fuel vehicles still technically meet regulatory standards. He said it would be almost impossible for companies that produce large-displacement cars, such as Lamborghini, to comply with regulations after 2035. Moreover, the cost of developing internal combustion engines has become extremely high, and meeting current Euro 6 emission standards and even future Euro 7 standards is an even greater burden for companies.
Lamborghini’s plug-in hybrid strategy is not limited to the Urus model. According to the editor's understanding, on March 30, Lamborghini released a new supercar called Revuelto, which is the successor of Lamborghini Aventador (commonly known as "Big Bull"). The Revuelto is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system composed of a 6.5-liter V12 naturally aspirated engine and three drive motors. The combined power of the system can reach 1,015 horsepower and the acceleration time from zero to 0-100 seconds is 2.5 seconds. This marks Lamborghini’s first time in a supercar. A hybrid powertrain is used on the sports car.
As the automotive industry continues to transform toward electrification, Lamborghini is actively adapting to market demand and plans to launch plug-in hybrid and pure electric models. The move is a response not only to environmental regulations but also to growing consumer demand for electric models. The launch of Lamborghini's hybrid and pure electric models will bring users a more environmentally friendly and efficient driving experience, while also demonstrating the brand's continued pursuit of technological innovation.
