Recently at AWE 2023, CREAL demonstrated two light field near-eye display solutions, one is an AR head-mounted display based on a free-form lens, and the other is an AR optical module based on HOE, which is characterized by phase LCoS. Multiple groups of light sources enable zoom display.

Foreign media Road to VR experienced the two technologies separately and found that dynamic zoom made the AR display more realistic. They said: I can reach out my hand and interact with the virtual turtle at close range, even though the AR turtle is half It's transparent, the resolution isn't particularly high, and the colors aren't very accurate, but it feels very real, like the turtle is actually in the palm of your hand.

In terms of details, CREAL’s AR headset is mainly for proof of concept, while the HOE optical module is a newer technology, showing a more lightweight AR appearance. It is characterized by good light transmittance, compatibility with prescription lenses, and can be used with Integration of common eyeglass shapes. Although CREAL design has advantages in terms of flexibility and cost, it still faces technical challenges, as follows:

  • ◎ The resolution is low, and the clarity of the AR demonstration is not as good as the existing AR headsets on the market, especially the new HOE solution;
  • ◎ The color gamut is not wide enough, the AR colors are not full, and they look a little faded;
  • ◎ FOV faces challenges. The light field display only accounts for 20-30° FOV, and the rest is filled by non-light field images, which means that the central visual periphery does not have the advantages of light field display such as zoom;
  • ◎ Peripheral vision is also very important to the human eye, so if it is a non-light field display, the CREAL display solution may not be able to achieve the ideal effect.

Next, CREAL plans to continue optimizing display technology, with the goal of increasing PPD from 40 to 50, FOV from 36° to 60°, doubling brightness to 7000nit, etc. in 2025. In addition, it is also hoped that eye tracking and foveation rendering can alleviate the problem of limited light field display range and prevent users from discovering the difference between the center and peripheral display areas. Eye tracking is a technology that faces significant technical challenges and is not yet fully developed in terms of latency, accuracy, stability, and volume.
