Home >Common Problem >Windows 11 22H2 upgrade is being offered to people with unsupported hardware
Microsoft has released Windows 11 build 22621 to Windows Insiders registered in the Release Preview channel, marking the launch of Windows 11 planned for later this year. 22H2 is another step closer to general availability. However, judging from reports on Reddit, users of unsupported hardware can also get the upgrade, even on Windows 10.
It’s important to note that there is also a Release Preview channel for Windows 10 and to receive cumulative updates before Windows 10 is released to the public, but supported hardware will still see “Windows 11, version 22H2 has been Ready to go” quote. The problem here is that it also seems to be available on unsupported hardware.
The screenshot above shows Reddit user AceRimmer412 giving their Windows 10 device the Windows 11 22H2 upgrade on an unsupported processor i5-7200U, and that’s me processor in the HP x360.
I tried to replicate these steps by installing the latest optional cumulative update (KB5014023) which also updated me to 19044.1741, then I signed up for the Release Preview channel but my laptop is not offering Windows 11 22H2 upgrade. Windows Update prompts that my device does not support upgrading to Windows 11. Probably because I had the PC Health Check app running.
Other users have gotten quotes for older hardware:
My old Dell Optiplex 7040, i7-6700 3.4GHz, 16GB, The Intel HD 530 qualifies today and I've upgraded it (using it for typing).
When I got home I saw if my old Dell XPS 15 9560 would work now.
It’s not certain yet if all of these users have signed up for the Windows 10 Release Preview Channel, but it seems likely. It doesn't appear to be available in the same way for everyone on older hardware, but that could also have something to do with Microsoft's staggered rollout of feature updates.
Another possibility is that someone forgot to turn on a switch via the Windows Insider channel that blocks the installation of Windows 11 on unsupported hardware. The original preview version of Windows 11 allowed this, and it's possible that because this is a completely new feature version of Windows 11, it somehow showed up again on unsupported hardware.
