Apple patent envisions future MacBook support for Apple Pencil
Apple continues to explore the future, imagining what a new MacBook with Apple Pencil support will look like. The tech giant has filed today to amend a patent covering an Apple Pencil that can be detachably mounted above a MacBook keyboard.
Apple’s twist on previous patent
When the Pencil is placed in a holder inside a computer, it can act as a mouse. A high-end lighting system is also embedded in the holder, and the role of the F-Key row will be taken over by the Apple Pencil. This way, the function keys will light up on the Pencil. The patent shows a MacBook with an input tool (Apple Pencil or similar device) that has a sensor above the keyboard.

While Apple created the concept a while ago, new claims and aspects have been added to the patent application. For example, one claim calls for using magnetic elements to secure the Apple Pencil in its holder. Basically, Apple is considering replacing the Touch Bar on the M1 MacBook Pro with the Apple Pencil, so that it can double as a stylus and Touch Bar.
Touchscreen vs. No Touchscreen
A touchscreen Mac is what some users want. Early last year, we asked 9to5Mac readers for their thoughts on whether Apple should make a touchscreen Mac. Nearly half of the 4,600 votes cast were "yes." There are also a lot of people who don't pay attention to touch screens, with or without them. Steve Jobs didn't like the idea of a touch-screen Mac, and that's because he detailed the inconveniences it would cause.
"The touch surface doesn't want to be vertical. It demonstrates very well, but you'll get tired quickly and your arms will become very sore over time. It doesn't work, and this Ergonomically terrible."
While I have nothing against touchscreen Macs, I know many who do. I feel like if Apple invested time and effort into this concept, there would be a market for it. I can see the Apple brand gaining popularity in the education market and therefore being widely adopted in schools. I'm also curious as to what model of MacBook this applies to - MacBook Pro, Air, MacBook, or something else? Regardless, it's great to see Apple continue to innovate and keep us on our toes.
