How to enable tabs in File Explorer in Windows 11 Dev Channel

In Windows 11, we may see the tabbed interface return in File Explorer. Microsoft originally previewed it on Windows 10 in 2017 under the name "Sets" but then unceremoniously shelved it without any public reason.

The good news is that Tabbed File Explorer may be back from the dead, and you can actually test it out on the latest Windows 11 Dev Channel build by following our short tutorial based on some help from FireCubeStudios.

Before you begin, please note that this involves making some configuration changes to Windows 11 via third-party tools, so proceed at your own risk. Assuming you haven't tried building a Dev Channel on your host yet, we must consider doing so a must.

With that being said, let’s get started!

1. Make sure you are using Windows 11 Dev Channel build 22572. You can check this by opening a Run window ( Win R ) and entering winver. You should see "Build 22H2 (OS Build 22572.1)". If this is not the case, go to Windows Update and see if there are pending updates on the Development Channel. A screenshot of the expected results looks like this:
   
2. Download ViVeTool from GitHub here.
3. Open the command prompt as administrator.
4. Navigate to the directory where ViVeTool is installed and run the ViVeTool command: vivetool addconfig 34370472 2
5. You should see a success message like the screenshot below Shown:
   

   

6. Restart your computer.

You can now see a tabbed interface in File Explorer that displays a screenshot of my computer. It's important to note that this is obviously a work in progress, and Microsoft doesn't plan to offer a tabbed File Explorer in its current state, even to Insiders. Expect errors and instability in your use. We don't know when the company will launch this feature publicly, and hopefully it won't be canceled until it's released again.

NOTE: You can revert to the "default" File Explorer interface using the following command: vivetool delconfig 34370472 2
