No more switching back and forth between windows when you need to pin a specific app for quick reference! Microsoft's open source tool PowerToys is getting a new update that supports some new features, including "Always on Top" on Windows 11 and Windows 10.
As the name suggests, PowerToys' new feature keeps your application windows on top of your desktop, even if you open another application.
This is especially useful when you have multiple application windows open and want to keep a specific window on top for quick access or reference. Windows Calculator is one of the few applications with built-in "Always on Top" support, and now offers the same functionality to all applications through PowerToys.
As you can see in the screenshot above, you can now easily position certain windows over others even if you are not actively using the app above the window.
This new feature was introduced with PowerToys version 0.53.1 and can be activated using the Win Ctrl T shortcut key, but only works when PowerToys is running in the background.
This is because PowerToys is not built into the operating system and the user must allow the application to run in the background and on startup.
In our testing, we observed that the PowerToys Always on Top tool worked well.
If you would like to customize the visual outline, go to PowerToys Settings. In the settings, you can customize the outline of the application window and use a different color or turn off the outline entirely.
You can disable Always on Top when playing games or activating Windows Game Mode. The PowerToys advanced settings page even lets you exclude certain apps from this new multitasking feature.
If you want to exit PowerToys Always on Top, close the application window or use the keyboard shortcut highlighted above.
PowerToys’ macOS Spotlight-like search feature PowerToys Run finally gets support for web searches. Currently, PowerToys Run is limited to local search results, but it has been updated to support web searches.
PowerToys Run is faster than Windows Search and also performs web searches accurately. If you only want to use PowerToys Run's web engine functionality, just use ?? to filter in your search query.
when will you? ? In search queries, PowerToys will only display results from the web without sacrificing performance.
PowerToys v0.53 is available for download from GitHub and Microsoft Store.
