Home >Common Problem >Microsoft says Windows 11's File Explorer tab feature is still in development
At an event in early April, Microsoft announced several new features for Windows 11, including new snapshot layout gestures, folders in the Start menu, and the ability to have tabs in File Explorer , but this particular feature is still missing, and it won't debut in Windows 11 version 22H2.
Tabs in File Explorer are one of the biggest updates to Explorer in years. In addition to tabs, we're also getting a new sidebar and a darker dark mode for File Explorer. There's a new Home view that lets you view recently used files, like pictures or videos, and integrates with OneDrive.
File Explorer's tab support is obviously important, and many users wonder where it is. Thankfully, Microsoft has confirmed that it's still working on tabs for File Explorer, but it won't be coming to production builds of Windows 11 version 22H2, meaning a stable version of tabs is still far away.
In response to a question about Windows 11 File Explorer tabs, Microsoft's program manager reiterated that users may have to wait for the feature and its arrival is fraught with Uncertainty, the official noted:
"Features like tabs in File Explorer will show up when they're ready for Windows Insiders (between the Dev and Beta channels), we're no longer like in February Based on "publish" as mentioned in this blog post.
This clearly indicates that Windows 11 22H2 will not come with tabs in File Explorer, but it is possible that the feature will be enabled in the 22H2 version through some accumulation or feature experience in the future.
File Explorer tabs appeared in a preview build released this year and were later updated with drag-and-drop support before being removed. Just like your web browser, you can right-click in File Explorer and click on the "Open in new tab" option to open that specific folder in a new tab.
You can also reorder the tabs open in Explorer by selecting and dragging the tabs inside or outside the application.
Tabs are one of those features that should have been missing from Windows a few years ago. While it's coming soon, you may still have to wait until later this year to try the feature. There's still no official word on when tabs in File Explorer will enter the Windows Insider Program.
According to sources, Windows 11 Build 22621 is the RTM (Release to Manufacturer) version of version 22H2 (Sun Valley 2). This feature update is expected to be launched in the fall, with reports saying that it will be released in September or Launched in October.
