Home >Common Problem >Microsoft hints at Windows 11 22H2 release date, confirms RTM
According to hints dropped by Microsoft itself, the release date for Windows 11 version 22H2 is somewhere between September and October. The company accidentally or intentionally revealed this information in a new tutorial for OEMs and PC builders, and also announced that Build 22621 is RTM.
The first big update for Windows 11, "Version 22H2" aka "Sun Valley 2", is now complete. As we reported, Microsoft completed the Anniversary Update for Windows 11 on May 24 and has started seeding Build 22621 to some manufacturers. This will allow companies like Lenovo and HP to release their next-generation devices using this new version of the operating system.
Additionally, OEMs can now test their drivers for new updates. In fact, AMD just released a new driver update that supports the newer WDDM 3.1 driver model. WDDM 3.1 is apparently coming with Windows 11 22H2, and AMD has started preparing their drivers, but we currently don’t know what’s new or improved in WDDM 3.1.
Its partners can ensure compatibility with Windows 11 version 22H2 by submitting drivers before the September 5 deadline. Additionally, the company confirmed that Build 22621 is RTM:
"The lowest acceptable version of Windows 11 for 22H2 certification is the RTM version (i.e. 22621)."
It’s worth noting that this doesn’t mean the update will be released on September 5th. So, assuming this timeline stays on track and there are no changes to the plans we've heard from sources, you can expect the 22H2 build to arrive sometime in October.
September 5th is OEM deadline, which seems to indicate that the update will be released sometime between late September and late October. This ties into what we've already heard from other independent sources, that Microsoft's original intention is to release the first major update to the operating system sometime between September and October.
Although the update is complete and ready for manufacturers, Microsoft will keep it for a few months to resolve the remaining bugs through cumulative updates.
Last month we saw the company almost complete the update, which had removed the watermark but the final touches were still being released to testers. We expect this to continue over the coming months.
