Concept images and video showcasing foldable MacBook display

Two reports emerged last week suggesting that Apple was developing some kind of foldable MacBook display. Designer Antonio De Rosa created a set of renderings and a video showing his thoughts on what such a device would look like.

Both reports come from reliable sources, so it's clear Apple is at least toying with the idea, although the exact nature of any final product isn't entirely clear...

Display Analyst Ross Young noted that this appears to be a MacBook with a virtual keyboard that unfolds into a larger display when used with an external keyboard.

Now we have Apple on the roadmap for foldable laptops. We've heard interest in the largest size currently available, which is around 20. It can be used as a monitor and used with an external keyboard.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg agrees with the idea, but suggested it could be a hybrid MacBook/iPad.

I'm told that Apple has indeed been exploring a dual-screen, foldable MacBook/iPad hybrid device that would take the second approach. It would trade a physical keyboard and trackpad for a full touchscreen base.

De Rosa's shot has a physical trackpad with a virtual keyboard. In folded form, it doesn't look much different than today's MacBooks, but with a wider aspect ratio.

When opened, we get something that still looks a lot like a traditional MacBook, but the keyboard is a virtual keyboard on the lower part of the folding display.

The virtual keyboard means it gives the user a choice of styles and can indeed be used by different apps for completely different purposes.

If used as a giant iPad or with an external Used together with the keyboard, the full display is available.
