Manage Recently Installed Apps
Whether you want to see your recently installed content or prefer a clean Start menu, you can show or hide recently added apps.
To control which recently installed apps appear in the Windows 11 Start menu:
- Open the Start Menu and select Settings.
- Click Personalization in the left panel, then scroll down and click Get Started.
- Turn "Show recently added apps" on or off according to your preference.
Show or hide recently opened items
Windows will keep track of your recently opened files through the Start menu so you can quickly return to them later. If you want to maintain your privacy a little, you may want to turn this feature off.
To show or hide recently opened items in the Windows 11 Start menu:
- Open the Start menu and select Settings.
- In Settings, press Personalization>Start.
- Turn "Show recently opened items" on or off in Start, Jump List, and File Explorer settings.
This will remove recently opened items from the Start menu. It also removes them from the Quick Access section of File Explorer. If you rely on it, you may want to keep this feature turned on.
Show or hide your most used apps
If you have a few apps that you use primarily, it can be convenient to access them from the Start menu. However, some users may prefer to hide apps.
Do the following to show or hide the apps you use most:
- Click Start > Settings.
- In Settings, press Personalize>Start.
- Turn display of your most used apps on or off based on your preference.
NOTE: If you disable all of the Start menu settings listed above, you will have a Start menu with There are no items under the "Recommended" section.
Manage Start Menu Folders
Similar to the folders on Windows 10, Windows 11 also allows you to manage the available system folders.
To add or remove folders from the Start menu:
- Click Start > Settings, open Personalization, then click on the right to start.
- Click the folder option.
- Scroll and switch the folders displayed on the Start menu.
- After making your selection, the folder icon will appear in the Start menunext to the Power button in the upper right corner.
Moving Start Menu Position
Many new Windows 11 users don’t like the centered Start menu. Fortunately, you can move the Start button back to the left, which will feel more comfortable for long-time Windows users.
To move the Start menu to the left:
- OpenStart > Settings.
- Select Personalization and select Taskbar.
- Scroll down, expand the Taskbar Behavior section, and set Taskbar Alignment to Left.
- The Start menu and taskbar will be moved to the left corner of the screen.
Customize the Windows 11 Start Menu
