Apple recently updated the MagSafe battery pack firmware to allow the device to wirelessly charge iPhones faster — but you might still not have it. Here's how to force a firmware update.

The MagSafe Battery Pack is a great accessory designed to extend the battery life of your iPhone. Using the magnets used by MagSafe, the white box attaches to the back of the iPhone and transmits power wirelessly.

The convenient little box can charge your iPhone at 15W when connected to a power source, which is on par with other MagSafe charging docks. With its 2,000mAh battery, the charging speed slows down quite a bit.

Instead of delivering 15W through a power outlet, the MagSafe battery pack will offer 5W wireless charging for iPhones at launch. As you might expect, this charges the iPhone much more slowly than when connected via Lightning.

However, on April 19, Apple released a firmware update specifically for MagSafe battery packs. An update to version 2.7.b.0 was discovered to include changes to charging, allowing for faster 7.5W rates.

All MagSafe battery pack owners need to use a power accessory for faster portable charging of their iPhone to perform the update.

Updating MagSafe Battery Pack

The first thing to do is to check if the firmware has been applied since it is delivered as an over-the-air update. You can check the version number on your iPhone.

How to check your MagSafe battery pack firmware version

  • Connect the MagSafe battery pack to the back of your iPhone.
  • Open the Settings app, select General then About, then MagSafe Battery Pack.
  • The firmware version will be displayed in this menu.

Once connected, this is how you can see the version number of your battery pack on your iPhone. If it shows a version code of 2.7.b.0 or newer, it is enabled.

If you wait long enough, the battery will update itself. As an over-the-air update, your iPhone will attempt to check for updates and install them to the MagSafe battery pack, if available.

This is an automatic process, but not immediate. Apple's support page notes that processing the update this way can "take about a week," and requires an iPhone and battery pack to be connected in order to do so. So you might not even have it yet.

As is typical with Apple software updates, there is a manual method for installing firmware. To do this, you will need a Mac or iPad that can use a USB or USB-C connection and have access to the Internet.

How to Manually Update the Firmware of a MagSafe Battery Pack

  • Connect the MagSafe Battery Pack to your Mac or iPad. Connect using a Lightning to USB or Lightning to USB-C cable.
  • Keep the battery pack connected while the automatic process occurs . Apple says the firmware update will take approximately five minutes to complete.

After applying the update, check the firmware version number to make sure it completed successfully.
