According to Rufus, Microsoft has banned the downloading of Windows 11 ISO files.
Microsoft appears to have started blocking Windows ISO downloads from Rufus. Rufus is a popular open source tool for creating bootable media.
#The option to download Windows ISO images was introduced in Rufus 3.5, which was released by the developers in 2019. The ability to download Windows 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11 ISO images is a welcome addition as it makes the process of creating Windows boot media more comfortable.
The developers have also added more features to Rufus, significantly improving the program for some Windows administrators and users. 2022 adds options to bypass Windows 11 system requirements during an Inplace upgrade, create a local account instead of a Microsoft account, and reject privacy concerns entirely.
Downloading is powered by Fido scripts in Rufus, which has been working well since the feature was introduced. This script extracts download information from Microsoft servers and downloads are provided by Microsoft.
Rufus users are now receiving an error message when trying to download Windows 8, 10 or 11 using Rufus.
The current error message is displayed after selecting the operating system version in the downloader. It states:
Error: Windows ISO downloads are no longer available because Microsoft has changed its website to block it.
Windows 7 ISO downloads are still supported and work as before. It's unclear why Microsoft isn't blocking Windows 7 downloads either.
Microsoft still offers Windows ISO image downloads on its own website. Visiting the Windows 11 download page on Microsoft's website will continue to provide users with ISO images when requested.
A link to the thread on GitHub is provided where the issue is discussed. According to information posted there, Microsoft made intentional changes to prevent downloads from any other source than its own website.
Fido 1.30 change log also confirms the changes:
Disable Windows 8? Windows 11 ISO Download
Microsoft seems to be deliberately making their download servers hostile to our scripts, trying to fix this may take a long time...
The developers are working on Looking for help finding a workaround for this limitation. While official ISO images are available for download from Microsoft, downloads are limited to specific versions.
With Rufus and Fido, users can choose different versions to download. Another advantage is that the entire process is integrated into one program.
