In Windows 11, a flagship feature is the Widget Drawer, which is a reboot of News and Interests from Windows 10. While Windows 10's News & Interests is all about news and headlines relevant to your interests, Windows 11's Widget Board collects news, weather, sports scores, and stock prices in a single widget.

Similarly, the widget board displays temperature and weather in the taskbar. This feature is called "Taskbar Dynamic Content," and Microsoft now plans to show more dynamic updates on the taskbar. Currently, taskbar dynamic updates are limited to weather, but that may change soon.

Widget integration into the taskbar should soon allow users to see financial and other updates. It still works the same way: you will receive the alert directly on the taskbar without even clicking on the icon. As you can see in the screenshot below, the taskbar will display live updates from the Sports and Finance widgets.

#The taskbar widget button will automatically switch between weather, sports and financial updates. Additionally, Microsoft plans to push breaking news alerts through the taskbar.

Microsoft is proud of the new Dynamic Taskbar, an update the company believes will make it easier for users to understand certain content and "keep everyone informed about breaking news."

You can click on any of these alerts to open the widget board and learn more about the topics within the board. However, if you don't interact with the update for a few seconds, the taskbar will switch back to the weather.

Microsoft is currently testing this feature in the Dev Channel, but it will eventually be rolled out on Windows 11 22H2 as well.

More changes to the taskbar

As we recently reported, Windows 11’s taskbar will also get support for a new feature called the Search Bar, which will be similar Windows 10 search box.

Unlike Windows 10, Windows 11 does not have a search box on the taskbar. Instead, we have a small search icon next to the Start button. Microsoft wants to bring the same search bar back to Windows 11, and it will just open the existing Windows search panel.

Unfortunately, the full right-click menu that was removed in the original version is still missing in the latest version of Windows 11. The ability to ungroup icons is also unavailable, and Microsoft has confirmed that features like moving the taskbar won't be coming to the operating system anytime soon.
