The new Windows 11 File Explorer

Get ready because your Windows 11 File Explorer in is about to get some improvements. After some testing, notably last month's Windows 11 beta builds, File Explorer will soon get its own tabs, favorites, a new homepage, and other new features . Microsoft officially announced these features at its Windows 11 Hybrid Work event on Tuesday, April 5, but the features still don’t have an exact release date. Windows 11 File Explorer’s tabs feature has come a long way before being finalized. Microsoft first started testing it on Windows 10 apps in 2018 due to user demand and persistence. Tabs were introduced under a feature Microsoft calls Settings, where File Explorer gained support for it, along with Command Prompt, PowerShell, and Notepad. Unfortunately, it is not available to Windows 10 users after Microsoft canceled the project. But since its presence in Windows 11 beta builds was successful, we can now look forward to the feature's official arrival.

New tabs placed in File Explorer will quickly let users access different folders in a single window. It will also allow moving tabs, making it easier and more organized for users.

The new tab feature will also be joined by a new File Explorer homepage with quick access to folders and recent documents. What's more, there will be a new favorites option so you can right-click on a specific file and add it to your favorites. Doing so will pin it to File Explorer's home page.

Additionally, File Explorer will soon offer updated sharing options, such as a new sharing dialog that allows files to be sent to certain applications such as Teams, Outlook, and OneDrive as well as recent contacts.
