

Microsoft Turing Image Super-Resolution promises to eliminate low-resolution images everywhere
Have you ever had to view or process poor quality images? Maybe an image from an old camera with a low resolution, a poorly photographed eBay auction item, or a forum post that only shows a thumbnail and not the full image? There's usually nothing you can do to improve the quality of such images. While you may be able to find a better version, for example, by running a reverse image search, this is not guaranteed.

Microsoft believes it has the answer to this question. Turing Image Super-Resolution is using artificial intelligence to enhance images. Already used on Bing Maps and currently rolling out to some Microsoft Edge Canary users, Microsoft believes its technology will eliminate bad and low-resolution imagery everywhere in the future.

Microsoft published a blog post on the official Microsoft Bing blog explaining the technology. Several before and after photos are provided to highlight the changes Turing-ISR made to the original photo. The thumbnail images released by Microsoft are of poor quality and require opening the image or saving it to your local system to compare the full resolution version.
When you do this, you may notice that Turing Image Super-Resolution is able to perform different operations on the source image. In addition to immediately increasing the resolution of an image, it can also improve its clarity or otherwise enhance it.

Microsoft has already used the aerial imagery feature in Bing Maps This new technology. Microsoft says it has rolled out the feature to "most of the world" and that 98% of side-by-side test users preferred the enhanced image over the original image.
Some Microsoft Edge Canary users are already seeing image enhancements in the browser. Microsoft is currently not providing details about its implementation in Edge, but explains that it is using a content delivery network to enhance images to avoid duplication of images.
According to the blog post, the company aims to make "Microsoft Edge the best browser for viewing images on the web."
