Microsoft is overhauling multiple Windows 11 apps. Microsoft has released new looks for Windows Media Player (Groove Music), Notepad, Paint, Microsoft Store and other applications. Another notable but important change is the Your Phone app, which is now officially called Phone Links.
The new name for Microsoft’s Your Phone app, Phone Links, comes as the tech giant plans to add support for more devices. That’s not all, Windows 11’s new Phone Link app also adds some much-needed new design features like Mica and Aycrlic, which are based on Microsoft Fluent Design and WinUI respectively.
We're not entirely sure why the renaming was needed, but it's good enough and does convey that this is an app that connects your phone to your desktop. The change was spotted earlier today, and Microsoft officials said the updated apps will begin rolling out in the coming weeks.
Like the Your Phone app, Microsoft's Phone Link allows you to send and receive text messages from your Android phone. You can also access calls stored on your phone and make calls directly from your desktop. Microsoft's app offers a variety of advanced features, including Samsung-only features for syncing your clipboard and running Android apps.
These advanced features are limited to Samsung flagship devices, but that could soon change, at least for Honor pones.
Along with the rebrand, Microsoft has also added support for other phones. Features like clipboard syncing and Android app streaming will be coming to flagship phones made by Honor.
Obviously, this move will bring Microsoft’s Phone Link to China, as Honor will be working directly with Microsoft. This also confirms that your phone/mobile link functionality will no longer be exclusive to Samsung phones.
You can expect more partnerships and better integration with OEM Android phones in the future.
Phone Link comes with a new design built specifically for Windows 11.
This update will make it even better as it will allow you to easily manage notifications from the Phone Link app homepage.
Based on our testing, the renamed Windows 11 app doesn’t appear to offer any new features, but it will bring the app in line with other native apps so you can Expect mica, acrylic, rounded corners, pastel color palettes and more.
Interface-wise, it's almost the same, but with one major change - a new way to navigate between different tabs.
Notification feeds are now pinned to the left panel, and the navigation bar is now at the top of the window to help users access their phones, calls, apps, and more.
