Apple is said to be increasing production of mini-LED chips and bringing more manufacturers into its supply chain to meet demand for new devices in 2022.
Over the past three years, Apple has expanded its use of mini-LED technology and currently offers three devices with mini-LED displays: Pro Display XDR, 12.9-inch iPad Pro and high-end MacBook Pro. The company is expected to launch several new devices with mini-LED displays this year, including an 11-inch iPad Pro, a 27-inch iMac Pro, a redesigned MacBook Air, and possibly even a new external monitor.
Taiwan’s Epistar is currently Apple’s main supplier of mini-LED chips, but the company’s growing number of devices equipped with mini-LED displays has reportedly forced it to seek additional suppliers. DigiTimes Citing industry sources, China's Sanan Optoelectronics is significantly reducing prices at Apple's existing suppliers and has now been certified to supply mini-LED backlit display chips to the company.
Demand for Apple’s mini-LED display technology is “expected to increase significantly in 2022,” likely due to the continued success of high-end MacBook Pro models and the launch of new devices. To meet growing demand from Apple, Epistar is expanding its production facilities in China to ramp up production starting in the second quarter of 2022, while Sanan Optoelectronics is likely to start shipments at the same time.
Mini-LED display technology (called "Liquid Retina XDR" displays by the Apple brand) can deliver deeper, darker blacks with better overall contrast, although unlike OLED displays, they may suffer from a A phenomenon called "blooming". Mini-LED displays can also display brighter, richer colors and offer additional benefits such as thinner designs, better power efficiency, and less risk of burn-in or degradation.
