Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 21H1 will reach End of Service (EOS) in three months. Earlier today, the company released the November 2022 Patch Tuesday security updates for Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows 7 and 8.1.
In addition to Windows 10’s Patch Tuesday, the company also reminded about the upcoming EOS status of version 21H1 (Windows May 10, 2021 Update). The announcement states:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION All versions of Windows 10 version 21H1 will end of service on December 13, 2022. After December 13, 2022, these devices will not receive monthly security and quality updates. These updates include protection against the latest security threats. To continue receiving security and quality updates, we recommend that you update to the latest version of Windows.
Mabel Gomes, senior communications program manager at Microsoft, published an article on the Microsoft Technology Community Forum today to remind users of this. While such Windows 10 21H1 devices will automatically update to the latest supported version of Windows (unless they are somehow blocked by user input), Microsoft is also reminding people that Windows 11 can be upgraded if the device is eligible. The company mentioned its new Windows 11 22H2 feature updates multiple times throughout the post, as it seems to want more Windows 10 users to jump on board the Windows 11 train. It says:
We will automatically update end-of-service devices to the latest version of Windows 10, but you can choose to upgrade eligible devices to Windows 11.
[..] Windows 11 version 22H2 (also known as Windows 11 2022 Update) is available to you on eligible Windows devices.
Microsoft keeps reminding users about Windows 11 for good reason. The latest data shows that only 15% of people upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Windows 11’s stringent system requirements put many users off. This is a huge challenge for organizations, and even a full year later, only about half of systems support Windows 11, according to data from a large-scale survey.
