After integrating ChatGPT into Bing.com, Microsoft recently confirmed that it plans to bring the same technology to its workplace productivity. Microsoft 365 is getting "Copilot" functionality. Like OpenAI's prompt-based ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot can help you write documents, analyze data or reports in Excel, create presentations, and more.

Microsoft announced Office 365 Copilot during a virtual press conference on March 16 and released a video highlighting the new AI technology. Details about Microsoft 365 Copilot availability are scarce, but it appears Microsoft is already working on the integration.

We have started using an earlier version of "Copilot for Word" in Windows 10 and Windows 11, which is only available to some users. This feature is buried in the latest Office Word for Insiders (Beta channel) and doesn't work properly, at least for now.

"A new way to work smarter and faster. This private preview is available to select Microsoft 365 enterprise customers," Microsoft described the feature in an early version of Word AI accessed by Windows Latest .

  • Handle formatting details
  • Suggest or rewrite content for your text
  • Generate summary from document
  • Open writer unblock dialog
  • Show editor PaneAI Feedback Skittle Start
Our testing showed that Copilot for Word has only two prompts - "Start document" and "Just write it down."

Both options perform largely the same task - write a completely new document or change an existing document based on your input.

Word AI often fails to work properly and throws an error message stating that it cannot Understand the request. This also happens when we select an action or prompt suggested by Microsoft AI.

You will soon be able to ask Microsoft 365 Copilot to draft an entirely new document, or one based on data from other documents or topics from existing documents, based on references in the leaked version. You can even ask it to change certain paragraphs or points in your document.

For example, you can ask Microsoft 365 Copilot to rewrite or rephrase a paragraph or change its tense/tone to make it more concise.

You can pick up where you left off and create PowerPoint slides using the same document or new information. You can ask AI to summarize a Word document and create a slideshow based on the document's summarized data. This can result in a shorter or more engaging presentation. You can expect this feature to appear in your beta version of Office in the coming weeks.
