Check out Windows 11 Build 25206 on the Dev Channel

Microsoft’s release of Windows 11 version 22H2 isn’t the only highlight we saw today. In fact, there's a new build for Windows 11 Insiders today.

We've already taken a look at Windows 11 builds 22621.601 and 22622.601, which are now available on the Beta channel, so let's focus on the Dev channel now.

So, if you are testing on the Dev Channel, this article is definitely for you. We will dig deeper and discover everything.

A closer look at Windows 11 Build 25206?

In fact, the tech giant just released a new Windows 11 Insider build to the Dev Channel in the form of build 25206.

Keep in mind that Microsoft will release an entirely new operating system every three years, so be sure to check out what we know about Windows 12 so far.

According to Microsoft, the main highlight of this release is a change in the behavior of the SMB authentication rate limiter.

You should know that the SMB Authentication Rate Limiter in the Insider Preview build adds an additional protection mechanism to the SMB Server service.

It actually implements a delay between each failed NTLM authentication. This means that if an attacker previously sent 300 brute force attempts per second from the client for 5 minutes (90,000 passwords), the same number of attempts will now take at least 50 hours.

So, starting with Build 25206, it is enabled by default and set to 2000 milliseconds (2 seconds). Any incorrect username or password sent to SMB now causes a 2-second delay by default in all versions of Windows Insiders.

This protection is turned off by default when first released to Windows Insiders. This behavior change has not been made for Windows Server Insiders, it still defaults to 0.
