Microsoft recently announced a new media player for Windows 11, which replaces Groove Music and is supposed to be the successor to the famous Windows Media Player. The media player has been rolled out to testers running the Windows 11 Dev Channel, but user reports indicate that the new app is now available to non-Insiders as well.
A new update sets the Windows Media Player software requirement to Windows 11 Build 22000, which means you can now install the app through the Microsoft Store. If you don't see the update in the App Store, you should be able to install the app manually as long as the device is running Build 22000.346 or higher.
Windows Media Player was first teased during a live podcast stream, with Microsoft officially announcing the redesign in November 2021. The company has been testing Media Player for more than two months, and it appears to be working fine. Additionally, a new update to the media player supports system accent colors.
Media player now respects system accent colors in Windows 11. With the latest update, it’s finally possible to use Windows 11 accent colors and replace apps’ built-in color system “Zest”. If you prefer Zest, you can return to the default previous style at any time from Media Player's settings.
The new media player is built specifically for Windows 11 and uses WinUI elements, rounded corners, and more. Currently, the media player is only available on Windows 11, but it will also arrive on Windows 10 without rounded corners and mica-themed backgrounds for the app.
It is worth noting that the new media player will replace the existing Groove Music player and automatically import all its databases after the update, including playback list or your saved media location.
Keep in mind that classic Windows Media Player won’t be available everywhere. If you prefer the classic Windows Media Player, you can still enable it from Optional Settings, although it goes without saying that the old Media Player will be removed from the operating system in a future version.
As mentioned at the beginning, Media Player is now available for Windows 11 Build 22000. If you don't see the update in the Store, you can download it from here.
