Springer Nature collaborated with institutions such as the University of Frankfurt in Germany to develop an algorithm, which was used to automatically write a book on the latest research progress in lithium-ion batteries. Its content is no different from traditional books. It also has a preface, table of contents, and bibliography, but it is 100% automatically generated by AI, and the staff did not change even a single punctuation mark.

Not only can it write news, AI has already started publishing books.

Following the publication of two books using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Springer Nature has published a third book generated by AI, "CRISPR— —Computer-generated literature review. This is a literature review book about CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) gene editing technology. The chief editors of the new book are all from ShanghaiTech University, namely Zhang Ziheng, a doctoral student in the School of Life Sciences and Technology, Wang Ping, a subject librarian in the Library and Information Center, and Liu Jilong, a professor in the School of Life Sciences and Technology. This is the first time that Springer Nature has used AI to summarize literature in the field of life sciences to generate books, and it is also the first time that Chinese scholars have participated in the experiment of AI-generated books.

As we all know, CRISPR and related technologies have been an important research hotspot in recent years, and related research results have grown explosively. As of June this year, Springer Nature alone has published more than 53,000 articles Related papers. Therefore, researchers are faced with the challenge of how to quickly understand and master the latest scientific advances in this field from a large amount of literature. Springer Nature’s series of practices in applying AI to academic publishing provide solutions to such challenges.

AI opens a new era of scientific publishing

Springer Nature published the first book on lithium-ion batteries entirely generated by AI in 2019, titled "Lithium Ion batteries: a computer-generated summary of current research. Springer Nature collaborated with the University of Frankfurt in Germany and other institutions to develop an algorithm that automatically wrote a book on the latest research progress in lithium-ion batteries. Its content is no different from traditional books. It also has a preface, table of contents, and bibliography, but it is 100% automatically generated by AI, and the staff did not change even a single punctuation mark. This book summarizes the latest research progress in the rapidly developing field of lithium-ion batteries. Its content is a cross-corpus automatic summary of a large number of existing research papers in this subject, which helps researchers effectively deal with the information overload problem in this field. . Henning Schonberger, director of book publishing solutions at Springer Nature, said that this is actually the first computer-generated scientific book and it has the potential to usher in "a new era of scientific publishing."

Subsequently, in 2021, Springer Nature published another AI-generated literature review book "Climate, Planetary and Evolutionary Science: A Computer-Generated Literature Review" using a hybrid human-computer interaction method. Unlike previous books on lithium-ion batteries that were entirely based on AI, this new book uses an innovative hybrid human-computer interaction method. The new book blends human-written text with a computer-generated literature review based on a large collection of previously published articles in Springer Nature-published journals, which the authors then put into individual chapters of the book and provide scientific insights. This is the first book published in this way.

AI automatically generates an abstract after reading the paper

The book "CRISPR - Computer Generated Literature Review" is automatically generated by Springer Nature's latest AI platform. The editor-in-chief team searched for journal articles in this field published by Springer Nature in recent years based on self-defined keywords, and then screened out 114 papers in the search results based on the knowledge graph calculation of the research field and the editor-in-chief's theoretical framework. The AI platform automatically generates abstracts after reading the full text of these papers. Finally, the editor-in-chief team classified and sorted the abstracts of these articles into six chapters, and manually wrote introductions to each chapter to facilitate readers' reading.

It is reported that this book comprehensively displays the latest research progress in CRISPR-related fields, and provides a very useful reference material for graduate students interested in research on CRISPR and related technologies, as well as researchers at the initial stage.

Liu Jilong, one of the chief editors of the book, said: "CRISPR, like the field of lithium battery research, has produced a large number of papers in recent years, so it is very suitable to use AI to generate literature reviews more quickly and efficiently. I am very I am happy to participate in this experimental project of Springer Nature and witness how AI can exert its significant potential in book creation and knowledge dissemination. I believe that in the near future, this AI-based automatic document summarization system will further promote Scientific progress makes revolutionary contributions to the spread of human knowledge."

Dr. Tang Enping, President of Springer Nature Greater China and President of Global Book Business, said: "This new book combines human- and computer-written content and is another excellent example of human-computer interaction generating books. We We are very happy to have Chinese authors participating. Currently, we are using this AI platform to help more authors generate book content. We believe that readers will see more such books in the future. In addition, we are also exploring AI-generated content. Some chapters of the book are still written by humans."

Since the electronic version of the book was launched more than 4 months ago, there have been more than 2,700 visits (including online reading and downloading of e-books), an average of Each chapter has been accessed more than 400 times.
