Apple has finally taken the wraps off the next generation of Apple chips. The new Apple M2 chip builds on the success of Apple's first ARM-based SoC, focusing on delivering better power efficiency as well as some performance improvements.

According to Apple, the new Apple M2 chip has the same unified memory architecture as its predecessor, but it offers better performance and lower power consumption. The chip contains 20 billion transistors, 25% more than the M1. Additionally, the new memory controller offers 50% more bandwidth than on the M1 and supports up to 24GB of unified memory.

The new Apple M2 chip contains an 8-core CPU consisting of four high-efficiency cores and four high-performance cores. Thanks to this, Apple claims the M2 performs 18% better than the Apple M1. Apple even claims the new M2 chip is 1.9 times faster than 10-core PC laptop chips while using a quarter of the power. Apple also says the new chip delivers 87% of the power of a 12-core PC chip while using only 1/4 the power, but we'll be thoroughly testing those claims once we get our hands on the new MacBook Air.

In addition to the upgraded CPU, the new Apple M2 also comes with a next-generation GPU with up to 10 cores (two more than the M1). The GPU helps the new chip deliver 25% more graphics performance than the M1, and up to 35% more graphics performance at full tilt. Like the CPU, Apple claims the upgraded M2 GPU delivers GPU performance 2.3 times faster than a 10-core PC laptop.

Apple has also added some other interesting features to the new M2 chip, including Secure Enclave, Neural Engine, a next-generation media engine with 8k, H.254, HEVC video and ProRes support. A new media engine helps the M2 output multiple 4K and 8K video streams, as well as providing 6K external display support. The Apple M2 will debut on the new MacBook Air and the updated MacBook Pro 13.
