Windows 11s media player is getting new features, including new playback tools

Windows 11 is all about integrating the universal design language “WinUI” into the operating system and its native applications. Over the past few months, Microsoft has given default operating system apps a new coat of paint, such as MS Paint, Notepad, and even Windows Media Player.

There are many excellent third-party video players for Windows, but Windows Media Player holds a special place in the hearts of users who grew up watching videos/movies on Microsoft's Glass Player. After launching Groove Music and the Movies and TV apps that debuted with Windows Metro UI, Microsoft is now trying to revive the Media Player name.

Windows 11’s media player replaces Groove Music and comes with a new design built using WinUI and Fluent Design. It has some features and functionality of older media players and has a smoother interface similar to other designs of the operating system.

The last major update for Modern Media Player updates the accent color system with support for custom colors. With today's update, Microsoft is now introducing a new album details view on the media player's artist page.

As you can see in the screenshot above, you can now easily switch between different views while browsing the collection. You can view shows from all albums in a grid view, and there's another view that shows all songs grouped by album. The update also adds quick actions for albums, artists, videos, and playlists.

These quick actions appear as you hover your mouse over them for quick selection and playback.

Additionally, Microsoft is testing a new Video Enhancement Options dialog box that appears when you play a video in Media Player. To try out the new enhancements, you need to right-click anywhere on the video and a new, convenient context menu will appear on the playing screen.

New context menu lets you adjust the brightness and contrast of your video.

Like previous updates, today's new update improves media player performance for users with large music libraries.
