What will the iPhone 14 be called?

Given that the 2021 iPhone is indeed called the iPhone 13, we expect the 2022 iPhone to be the iPhone 14. Whether Apple will return to the "S" brand remains to be seen, but rumors suggest that the 2022 iPhone will be a big enough upgrade to warrant a new number.

It's also possible that Apple will ditch numbers from its iPhone lineup entirely, with new iPhones designated solely by size, "Pro" or not, and year. This would match what Apple has done with its iPad lineup over the past few years.

Apple’s marketing name was kept secret until the last minute. That means we'll have to wait until 2022 to learn more about what that year's launch will be officially called.

What features and specifications does iPhone 14 have?

No Notch

The biggest change we currently expect for the 2022 iPhones is the elimination of the notch. The notch design was first introduced with the iPhone X and has remained the same since. The notch is where Apple places its sensors, like Face ID.

Apple will move down the tiers in 2022, starting with the high-end iPhone 14 Pro. Kuo describes the design changes as “hole-punching design.” Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the iPhone 14 will feature a “complete redesign.” The hole-punch design can only be realized if Apple's prototyping and production go as planned. Apple currently aims to bring the hole-punch design only to the high-end iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Therefore, unless Apple exceeds product yield targets, the standard iPhone 14 will retain the notch design.

If the hole-punch design sounds familiar, that's because it's currently used on many high-end Android flagships. It makes sense for Apple to go with this design on the iPhone 14.

YouTuber and leaker Jon Prosser also confirmed the punch-hole design, claiming to have seen real-life images of the iPhone 14 Pro Max without the notch.

All the information about iPhone 14 in 2022, the updates youre looking forward toOn the iPhone 14 Pro, the “hole punch” will house the camera that currently sits in the notch. What remains unclear is the fate of Face ID. Apple may ditch Face ID in favor of under-display Touch ID.

Here's the technology currently in the iPhone notch:

Thermal Imaging Camera
  • Flood Illuminator
  • Proximity Sensor
  • Ambient light sensor
  • Speaker
  • Microphone
  • Front camera
  • Dot projector
  • However, reliable Analyst Ross Young has provided more details about the design of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. According to Young, Apple actually plans to use a "hole pill design" on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

In a report, Yang explained:

We now believe Apple will adopt a hole pill design on iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. The smaller hole won't be invisible... the two-hole concept will be unique to Apple, just like the notch, and unlike any of Huawei's pill models.

This combination of punch holes and pill-shaped cutouts seems to give Apple more room to fit all of the aforementioned components outside of the notches.

Touch ID

While early iPhone 14 rumors suggested that Apple would bring under-display Touch ID to the iPhone, that no longer appears to be the case. Apple was forced to delay Touch ID until 2023 due to insufficient display.

Apple faces “lower-than-expected development progress” on its efforts to integrate Touch ID into iPhone displays. It's also possible Apple could take a less ambitious approach and integrate Touch ID into the iPhone's power button, similar to the iPad Air and iPad mini. But ultimately, Touch ID isn't expected to be a feature on this year's iPhone 14.

No Camera Bump

All the information about iPhone 14 in 2022, the updates youre looking forward toAccording to Prosser, at least some models of the iPhone 14 will not feature a camera bump. Currently, iPhones have a prominent camera bump due to their thin design and the necessary thickness of the camera assembly.

Prosser says Apple will be able to ditch the iPhone 14’s camera bump by making the iPhone itself thicker.

Camera Improvements

The iPhone 14 will also include major improvements to the front-facing camera. The biggest change will be an upgrade to the front-facing camera’s autofocus capabilities. More details are unclear here, but there are ways for front-facing iPhone cameras to catch up to rear-facing cameras.

In terms of rear cameras, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be upgraded to 48-megapixels, an increase from the 12-megapixel sensor in the iPhone 12.

Despite the 48-megapixel sensor, the iPhone may still output images with a resolution of 12 megapixels. Similar to some Android phones, Apple can use smart scaling algorithms that take the raw 48-megapixel data and create a 12-megapixel output image with more detail and less noise.

The camera system of iPhone 14 will also be upgraded, supporting 8K recording for the first time.

Screen size

The iPhone 14 will not have a “mini” form factor like the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Instead, it is suggested that Apple will offer iPhones in four different screen sizes: 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch.

For example, it might be iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, then iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. It's sad to see the 5.4-inch form factor discontinued after two years, but reports suggest the device didn't sell nearly as well as Apple expected.

无PORT

For several years, there have been reports that Apple might launch a portless iPhone. This iPhone doesn’t have a Lightning port and is completely wireless. There were rumors that this would be coming in 2021, but that's not the case.

So the iPhone 14 may be the first iPhone without a Lightning port. The iPhone 14 will not support Lightning, but will instead support wireless charging and Apple’s latest MagSafe technology. Apple is likely to make this change at the high end first with the 14 Pro. Lower-end models will be launched in the next few years.

Chips and Speed

While some rumors had expected that the iPhone 14 might use a new chip produced with 3nm technology, this is no longer expected to be the case. Currently, Apple's chip partner TSMC is expected to use an enhanced 5nm manufacturing process in the iPhone 14, likely called A16.

Release date: When will iPhone 14 come out?

With the exception of the iPhone 12, which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, new flagship iPhones are typically announced and released in September. The iPhone 14 will be released sometime in the second half of 2022. Therefore, the iPhone 14 series is likely to be launched in September 2022.

The iPhone 14 Max, or whatever it ends up being called, will be priced under $900.

mPDF

mPDF is a PHP library that can generate PDF files from UTF-8 encoded HTML. The original author, Ian Back, wrote mPDF to output PDF files "on the fly" from his website and handle different languages. It is slower than original scripts like HTML2FPDF and produces larger files when using Unicode fonts, but supports CSS styles etc. and has a lot of enhancements. Supports almost all languages, including RTL (Arabic and Hebrew) and CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Supports nested block-level elements (such as P, DIV),
