Microsoft’s Bing search engine combines OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology to form a new search engine with conversational functions. The updated Bing functions like a chatbot with broad internet access. Users can type their queries into a text box and let Bing gather the information and provide a comprehensive answer. By leveraging the powerful training of large language models, ChatGPT-enabled chatbots can provide responses in a conversational tone, with links to relevant resources and suggestions for further inquiries.
However, in some cases the answers generated may be incorrect or confusing. This can be attributed to the recent integration of ChatGPT with Bing, which is currently in the initial stages of rolling out to the public. Microsoft is fine-tuning the system and gradually inviting more users to test the updated Bing.
Although ostensibly artificial intelligence, Bing with ChatGPT is actually a set of algorithms designed to simulate the experience of talking to a human. The technology does this by leveraging its training in natural language synthesis to generate grammatically correct sentences. Essentially, the ChatGPT chatbot creates a response by trying to write the next appropriate word or phrase based on the analysis of large amounts of online text. It doesn't generate answers; instead, it collects data from the internet and contextualizes it by constructing text that mimics human language.
As a result, the Bing with ChatGPT experience differs from the traditional search engine approach of entering a few keywords and receiving a list of results. Bringing ChatGPT to Bing is part of a larger trend in the search engine industry, as Opera and Google are launching their own search AI assistants that could lead to a major shift in how people use search engines.
Microsoft provides a more advanced version of the new Bing in its Edge browser. There is a Bing button in the upper right corner that can open Edge's "Discover" sidebar. Allows users to ask Bing questions or get help with tasks. The feature is currently only available within Edge and not on the regular version of Edge that ships with Windows 11. The move is a strategic attempt by Microsoft to increase Edge usage, but competing browsers are unlikely to offer a similar level of Bing functionality. Currently, this new feature is only available to users who have been granted access to the new Bing and are using the Edge Insider build.
By signing up for free with a Microsoft account, users can choose to download Edge versions from the Beta, Dev, or Canary channels, with each channel varying in update frequency and stability. Once users gain access to Bing via ChatGPT, they can download one of the Edge versions to access the new Bing button, which opens a sidebar with three subsections: Chat, Compose, and Insights.
The Edge embedded version of Bing introduces new features that allow users to interact with search results in ways not possible with the web version. Bing can scan the current web page to answer questions and provide natural language responses. For example, a user can ask if a specific product is available for a lower price elsewhere, and Bing will search and respond accordingly.
The Compose feature lets users instruct Bing to compile a price list for a product from different retailers, or compose an email to an office supply manager recommending a bulk order of the product. The Insights tab provides data on where traffic to your page comes from and where people typically go after viewing the page. These features are currently only available to Edge users who have access to the Bing with ChatGPT feature.
The accuracy, originality, and usefulness of the data generated by Bing’s integration with ChatGPT remains uncertain as Microsoft works to enhance the tool. Currently, the new Bing can only be accessed through Edge or Edge Dev using a Microsoft account with permission to use the feature.
For those already using Bing and ChatGPT, downloading Edge can further increase productivity. Getting the Insider version of Edge and installing it on your computer is faster and more valuable than waiting for approval to access the new Bing.
