Microsoft is redesigning the search interface in Windows 11 and Windows 10

The latest preview builds of Windows 11 and Windows 10 are available to testers in the Dev Channel and Release Preview Ring respectively. It brings a new search experience to the desktop and provides several important bug fixes to other areas of the Windows operating system.
As part of a server-side update that is only available on test machines, Microsoft has improved the home page of Windows Search on Windows 11 and Windows 10. Since Windows Search is entirely web-based, this new search highlighting feature will also work on versions of older operating systems.
As you can see in the screenshot below, Windows 11 or 10’s new search feature highlights interesting moments based on your browsing or Microsoft account behavior. Searching the homepage will auto-populate content, fun illustrations, trending searches, events like Earth Day.
This new feature is dynamic and will be updated with new content throughout the day. It helps users discover new content, websites, and interesting topics to stay productive.
Thankfully, Microsoft is not planning to integrate its news feed into the search panel, but the new searches will be linked to popular searches on Bing.
If you are a member of an organization, Windows Search will also try to highlight your company's topics. However, the main goal of Search's new homepage is to showcase online trends both globally and in your region, so you get richer, bolder content without having to open a browser.
Additionally, Microsoft has confirmed support for regional Microsoft Rewards integration, and Windows Search will still display a list of recently opened apps or files on the left side of the homepage. You can also discover recently visited sites from the search homepage, so you can easily get back to your work.
You can turn off the new search experience on Windows
Windows Search’s new feature does appear to rely on your personal information to display personalized themes, but Microsoft says users have full control over the search highlight experience .
You can turn it off and restore the classic interface from Settings > Privacy & Security > Search Settings, then disable Show Search Highlights.
The same search highlights experience is coming to the Windows 10 search box, and everyone will receive an update later this month or early next month.
In addition to a new look, Windows 11’s search function will also become faster and more accurate in future feature updates.
