Microsoft: KB5015882, KB5015814 updates break Start menu in Windows 11

The last two cumulative updates for Windows 11 — KB5015882 and KB5015814 — are causing major issues for some users, according to several reports and Microsoft's own documentation. Due to a bug in the operating system, the latest round of updates may cause the Start menu to disappear as soon as you try to open it.

The latest optional update (KB5015882) brings new features to notifications on Windows 11. The update adds an option to receive emergency alerts even when focus assist is on. For those who don’t know, Focus Assist is similar to Do Not Disturb, and it’s also available on Windows 10.

Another new addition is the ability to update to a newer Windows 11 version during OOBE. This means you can install a feature update when the operating system boots, but it will only work if the device is eligible for the update. While this sounds like a pretty good update on paper, users are reporting that KB5015882 breaks the Start menu.

There are growing reports that there are some serious issues with the Start menu. During our tests, we observed that the Start menu did not launch when we pressed the Start button. In other words, the update made the Start menu disappear for some users.

This bug also affects the "Windows" key on the keyboard. Thankfully, Microsoft is aware of these reports, and the company has quietly acknowledged that the bug in KB5015814 or KB5015882 affects a "small number of devices" where users are unable to open Start.

On affected PCs, clicking or selecting the Start button or using the Windows key on the keyboard may not work.

Microsoft has released an emergency server-side update to address the broken Start menu, but it may take up to 24 hours to automatically propagate to all devices. If the Start button on your device still doesn't work, make sure to restart your Windows device as it will apply updates to your device faster.

Enterprise customers can find the special group policy in Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > KB5014668 220721_04201 Known Issue Rollback > Windows 11.
