Primary key constraint

Table usually has a unique identification table A column or set of columns of values ​​for each row in . If a primary key constraint is specified for a table, the database engine will automatically create a unique index on the primary key column to enforce the uniqueness of the data. This index also allows fast access to data when the primary key is used in queries. If a primary key constraint is defined on multiple columns, values ​​in a column may be repeated, but any combination of values ​​from all columns in the primary key constraint definition must be unique.

As shown in the figure below, the ProductID and VendorID columns in the Purchasing.ProductVendor table constitute a composite primary key constraint on this table. This ensures that each row in the ProductVendor table has a unique combination of ProductID and VendorID. This prevents duplicate rows from being inserted.

How to establish relationships between database tables

  • #A table can only contain one primary key constraint.

  • The primary key cannot exceed 16 columns and the total key length cannot exceed 900 bytes.

  • Indices generated by primary key constraints will not increase the number of indexes in the table beyond 999 non-clustered indexes and 1 clustered index.

Foreign key constraints

This column becomes the foreign key to the second table.

A table can reference up to 253 other tables and columns as foreign keys (outgoing references). SQL Server 2016 (13.x) increases the limit on the number of other tables and columns that can be referenced in a separate table (incoming references) from 253 to 10,000.   • Only the DELETE DML operation supports more than 253 foreign key references. UPDATE and MERGE operations are not supported.

  • Columnstore indexes, memory-optimized tables, Stretch Database, or partitioned foreign key tables do not currently support more than 253 foreign key references.

Index for foreign key constraints

Unlike primary key constraints, creating a foreign key constraint will not automatically create a corresponding index. But it is often useful to manually create indexes on foreign keys for the following reasons:
